Does all this aperture stuff really make a difference?
I have a Scorpion d/p, which has the same blanked off section as the origianl d/p.
Would I honestly get better performance with a SS or other larger flange system?
Does anyone have any comaprisons to back the theory up?
Is the world really round.......

After purchasing my V5 Type R i would like to know if it would be safe to fit the scorpion downpipe, magnex centre section and prodrive backbox i have sitting in my garage.

When i bought the car it already had a Hks system on it. It is the one that uses its own midsection so it is not compatible with the prodrive backbox alone.

I enjoy the sound that the Hks system is offering me at the moment, its just that the tail pipe is just too big, its like driving round with a 45 gallon drum welded on the back.

So will it be safe for the car, to fit the downpipe?
Currently running SUL and Millers, only showing one green light on my knock link sensor under all conditions. The car is also running a Hks induction kit which i fitted.

My big worry is that if i fit the downpipe it might make it run leaner, also will it raise the boost at all ?

The last thing i want is a melted piston so advise will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Paul

Downpipe - yes! Just be ready for the faceache from grinning.

However the Scorpion is not the best as it on has a small apperute which minimises gains, especially torque. SS or Falkland (which I have) have a full sized apperture to maximise power/torque - and noise!!!

...but if the pipe is lying around it's better than nothing!

Paul,

how did you adjust the sensitivity of your knock link? It would be possible to have knock and only have one light if it is adjusted incorrectly. Also, if you only ever get one green light then the sensitivity level that you have is pretty low.

My own experience of a V5 with tuning was initially poor. Induction kit and HKS exhaust was enough to cause the car to run very lean at certain points of the map. This is not true for all cars, however the more efficient you make the breathing without adjusting the map then the more likely it is to lean out...

...and just to add, the car would still knock with 3% Silkolene Pro Boost, although only at a very specific point of the map (around 7,200rpm).

I will fit a downpipe, but will adjust my Link Map to suit then it is in place. As other Link mappers will tell you, fitting a downpipe requires quite a bit of remapping to stop the car from running lean as it is the last great blockage in the pipes

Guys,

Does the same issue (running lean) apply to UK cars? Or is safe (safer) to fit a DP on them?

Cheers!

Stef,

this is an interesting issue surrounding flanges

If you look on the scoobynet Dyno site and compare mine and Jase Coopers MY00 cars.

I have the full catless scoobysport system including their downpipe with the wide flange.

When I got mine I looked around, and talked to a few owners, a couple had replaced Scorpion with SS/Falkland pipes and noticed gains acroos the board (also someone that replaced a PE with SS and also noticed more mid-range but less top end).

In speaking to 'specialists' they seem to think the BHP increase would be similar, but the torque should improve more with the bigger apperture?

I just like the extra go and the extra noise!!

Thanks for the replys.

Rannoch

My knock link sensor is set to max sensetivty and is showing very low activity, this is probably due to the sul and octane booster.

I think i`ll leave this downpipe off for now and wait and see how the new Scoobymania system performs when it is released in the near future.

Cheers
