Hi Folks,

Can anyone tell me why my engine whines when I drive hard? I know another equally confused scooby owner who has the same symptoms:

* High pitched related to engine revs
* Only when hot after driving hard
* Seems most obvious when cornering / accelerating hard (like off roundabouts).

It doesn't sound entirely unlike the whine rally cars often make. Is is related....

Could be transmission whine? (but its revs related not speed related)

I guess the main questions are...

a. What is it?
b. Is it a problem - i.e. $$$ in the future?

Any help appreciated.

MattT

P.S. FYI - my cars an MY94 hig miler, my mates is an MY98 average miler.

Not power steering is it? Had a similar problem on mine - made a whine after hard driving. Got the fluid changed and the problem went away.

Are you sure it's the engine? I get a faint kind of zzzzzzzzzzzrrrr sound when accelerating, thought it was the engine but more I listen seems to be from the gearbox/diffs? Still not sure if it's a good or bad thing but quite like the sound. Only makes the noise when moving, revving when stationary doesn't make it happen.

Matt,

<<* Seems most obvious when cornering / accelerating hard (like off roundabouts).>>

What sort of milage has your car done? If it's over 30K then it *could* be your clutch slave bearing. This is a high pitched whine on acceleration and higher speeds - a bit like the test-signal sound on your telly, and will be proportional to your engine revs rather than road speed. I think it's probably the most likely suspect and not too much to worry about. The cost of the component is negligable, the labour charges are large though, since it's the same as a clutch replacement. You have to split the engine and gearbox (ouch! ), if you ever need to replace your clutch then do it then,

Cheers,

Andy

Sounds like the problem that I had when I first got the car - Pete at Scoobysport topped up the Powerstearing fluid and all was ok - never heard it again.
