Here is the update on the driveshaft warranty mod for those that asked for more info.

According to my subaru dealer the grease they use from the factory is too thin (esp. on older cars) and can run out of the air hole. All they have to do is re-grease the cv joints with a thicker grease that will not escape.

They said that short term they only problem you get is a smell from the grease burning as it works its way back and comes into contact with the exhaust - no big deal. They also mentioned that it was better to have it fixed as it 'could' cause problems later on.
