I`ve had one fitted to my MY99 since new with no problems. I was told there would be problems and if i hadn`t any then the car was probably running too rich.
I`m now using Link management and have put the Bailey on with no ill effects.

I currently run a Bailey Piston Evo BOV with a special spring as my car was leaking boost at high revs with the standard weak spring. The new spring sorted that out and it made sure the BOV only vents when required and makes a more "buisiness-like" job of getting rid of the boost as quickly as possible, rather than making squeeky sounds anytime you even thought of lifting off the throttle.

You shouldn't have any MAF related running problems with a LINK as, in all the cases I know of, the link doesn't use the MAF.

Nick,

It's always worthwhile to get your car on the rollers after an upgrade like this to ensure it's running OK.

I'm running the HKS SQV and no problems so far...only vents the correct ammount to atmosphere. It's the only BOV that I know that works this way.

Graham Goode (0116-244-0080) fitted a dump valve to my 1994 WRX for £180.00.

Great sound with their induction kit - frightens women and children at 500 yards.

Question

I'll probably never understand this...an externally venting BOV will upset the air/fuel mixture at gear changes, since the air the MAF is expecting isn't recirculating - right?

(This will lead to nice flames when I get my decatted 3" system... *hehe* Nice...)

Are there any BOV's that'll let me have that glorious sound AND have a working car (an MY00 GT btw)?

moray

why did you have to uprate the spring in the first place, are you running more boost? i'm only running 15 psi so would i have to uprate the spring as well.
also did you need a fitting kit to install the dump vavle, cheers mate

Hi Gethin,

I work in/haunt bristol and live in clevedon (on the coast between W-S-M and Portishead).

Mail me off-line and we can arrange a Motec demo sometime... BTW: ALS is just a toy, it's the motec's map that really impresses.

Fitted the Baileys type dump valve to my UK 96 Turbo ( from PowerEng ). Easy to fit. Cars runs ok ie does not stall. Makes a great sound on gear change and appears to have reduced turbo lag.

Cheers

Thanks for pointing that out Moray! If only I knew, then I would have saved that £150 !!

Do you live in the Bristol area? Any chance of giving me a demo of that ALS system of yours

Gethin.

Gethin,

Hi dude. Sorry if this upsets you, but the Bailey piston evo works in the same way as the more expensive HKS SQV... still, the ~£150 difference certainly buys more credibility, doesn't it...

Nick,

I was running standard boost 16psi and standard turbo on an STI 3 when I found this boost leak problem. So, that's not far of 15psi, is it.

Oh, and the bits needed to fit it are: the dump valve itself (doh!), a blanking plug for the return hose of the standard system and a bit of samco hose to adjust for the dump valve/standard hose difference in size.

Hi Nick,

I have an HKS sequential dump valve from my old MY95. It ran perfectly and definately made a difference in throttle response and pick up. I took it off after about two weeks coz I didn't like the sound. If you're interested, it's yours for £150 including the full fitting kit which includes a braided hose, blanking plug etc. It's the purple dump valve by the way, certainly looks nice. Mail me privately if you're interested!

Nito,

Do you know you can change the HKS valves sound by fitting a different "Super Sound Vane"? I didn't like the camp, high pitched noise my one made... I sourced a replacement vane and it mad a much more acceptable noise...

I think I got the replacement from TDI for ~£15... maybe you should try this before writing of the money you spent on the valve?!

Hi Moray,

I think this option was only available on the Super sequential dump valve from HKS, the Silver one, mine is the purple chrome one which was not adjustable.

According to TDi the purple is more desirable and they reckon people prefer the sound of it! I thought it sounded like a fanny fart pardon the French, and was too embarassed to drive with it so I removed it, despite the fact that it definately seemed to be doing the job!

Regards,
Nito

I can highly recommend the Bailey in terms of noise. It a pretty similar noise to the OE one (with an Induction Kit) but a bit louder and more of a flutter!

In response to the fanny fart description, maybe Ive been hanging round the wrong women, but I cant recall a single one who sounded like a Blow Off Valve

Richie

PS Do correct me if Im wrong!

This maybe (well probably) a very dumb question but ive got a new WRX and it makes a quiet pissshhhh noise between gear changes above 3000 revs.

It sounds like a dump valve to me.

This is a standard car (MY00 WRX). Question is there one already fitted ? If so why are people putting other ones on ?

(PS not questioning anyone because I dont know jack s**t about any this just asking so that I will know better)

All Impreza turbos have them (I don't know if the earlier had them though), most people fit uprated valves, for 2 reasons, to get more sound from it (don't you love that WRC flutter?), and if they've raised boost and the stock item starts to leak preassure.

If you accelerate hard in 2:nd or 3:rd and abruptly lift off the gas you can hear the valve working, on my MY00 GT there's a quite audible "tschhh", but on my friends MY98 GT it's a much softer sound - more of a "psssss". *lol*

I want more!!!

Maybe an externally venting to go with the (soon) mounted 3" decatted system - flames galore!

Richie,

It's exactly that Flutter as you subtly put it that I'm talking about. I think in all honesty, that all sequential valves make the FF noise as the air is being vented sequentially as opposed to one long cool sounding tchhhhhhhhh or pssssssssss or whatever, as opposed to the sequential pffflfl, pffflflf ,pfflflf, pfffl ,pfffflfflff hence the FF!! Each to their own. The standard valve sounds pretty cool once the induction kit is fitted. The HKS does work well, maybe its just the way I interpreted the sound, I didn't like it and found it embarassing although females will tell you its just nature lol!! You have to bear in mind that my then MY95 was running standard boost and so it probably helped it sound even more pathetic. I'm sure more boost would have given a much more purposeful sound.

Nito
Sorry, no Wav's!! Ask at notorious street corners for a demo, might cost you £15 or so!!
