Question

Impreza Turbo Aug'97

When hot (just hot enough to get the fan on, not really cooking) I'm getting what feels like clutch drag - occasional difficulty engaging gears. Initially manifested as graunch going onto first from stationary, but not every time. Now feels that power is not being fully disengaged on all lower gear changes, up or down. The hotter it gets, the worse it is. No noticeable change in pedal feel or height (or maybe I'm just not noticing it).

First step is going to be bleeding clutch and then changing fluid but it's weird in that it doesn't need to be really cooking - 30mins around town will have the (un)desired effect - I would hove thought it would need to get really hot for fluid contamination to screw me up.

After 10mins cooling problem will still manifest, after 30mins cooling, problem goes away until hot again.

Good one huh? Nothing like this in the archive. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem on my MY94 to the extent that the clutch would drag and want to engage when stationary. I couldnt find the source of the problem so I took it to the local dealer who said I was missing the master cylinder head shield. Managed to get one from a wrecker. I didnt think this would fix the problem but have'nt had the problem since.

Iv'e heard of a similar problem, try using a DOT5 rated clutch fluid, it works at higher temperatures than standard DOT3 or 4.
