Question

MY94 WRX Wagon, HKS SuperDrager center section + backbox, HKS Super Mega Air Flow induction kit think.

It does not like the cold at all. When it starts up it's idling really rough, and if I don't blip the throttle then it can sometimes stall. It sounds as though it's a 60 a day smoker!

Is this normal? Once she's up to operating temp she's fine, but until then a blip of the throttle is needed when pulling out at junctions to get her moving.

That dont sound right.

I would get it check asap, when was it last serviced/tuned ??
When cold on Start up the car should burst in to life with the revs idleing higher than normal, mine stays about 12/1300 for a couple of minutes then all is back to normal.

Let us know.

Was told it was serviced the week before I got it, which was 21st April 2000

well, it does rev higher than normal idle, as you say about 1200/1300.

Will get it checked out. My thinking was that it's due to the channel tunnel proportions of the exhaust not giving enough back-pressure.

Cool

Markus,

If its a backpressure problem, why does it work fine when warm?

Markus,

I have a 93MY WRX (4 door) and the last few mornings it has stuttered a bit when started and just about manages to idle. A slight blip of the throttle and the revs rise to 12/1300 as usual.

The car is due for it's 60000 mile service very soon and i'm hoping that this will cure the problem, old plugs etc. the cause? You were told it was serviced but is there any documentation to prove this. Many peoples meaning of 'serviced' can range from a full Subaru service to just an oil change, or even just changing the air freshner . I'd get it serviced at a specialist and then you'd know for sure.

Tone.

Nick,

The electric bit on the top is the actuator for the cold start valve, but it also controls the normal idle speed.

If your warm idle is too high or low you can loosen the screws and turn the actuator housing and adjust the idle accordingly.

Did you take the actuator off and check inside it for dirt?

When did you last change your air filter? ...according to Lockyears a blocked filter can cause these cold-start problems.

Simon

simon, i checked looked inside the vavle and just seemed abit dirty not that bad ,but i did'nt take the vavle right off because i was worried about taking the water hoses off in case i got an air lock.i manage to clean the non return vavle through. i change the filter for a blitz one only 2 months ago ,but the old air filter was really dirty it had done about 25,000 miles on it (the previous owners fault)could this have done any damage, cheers ,nick.

simon, i cleaned the non return vavle and looked inside the start vavle, it looked a bit dirty but not to bad ,so i did'nt clean it,but i did'nt completly remove the start vavle i left the water pipes on because i thought i might get an air lock. I replaced the air filter 2 months ago with a blitz cone , but the old filter was black,i dont think it has never been changed in 25000 miles {the previous owners fault} might this have done any damage, thanx, nick.
