Waste Gate Solenoid ?
#1
I've just bought a WRX and there is a strange electrical sounding clicking noise coming from under the bonnet on the right hand side at the back of the engine.
I assume that turbo is there (?). If so, could this noise (which only happens between 70 - 90 on a motorway run) be a "dodgy solenoid" in the turbo waste gate ? I've read the SIDC FAQ and this sounds likely.
Does anyone know ? If so do i need to get it sorted out straight away ? (It's under warranty for 2 years).
Would appreciate any help. Also - does anyone know where i can get a manual for a WRX ?? (in English would be nice !)

Stuart, you've got a choice here, the wastegate solenoid is located on the right hand front suspension turret, and normally can be heard ticking at idle, the fault that is described in the FAQ tends to sound like blowing over a bottle.
The ticking noise you describe could be the Turbo Heat Shield, normally when these are cracked they rattle at their worst between 3000 and 4000 rpm, ie 70 to 90 in 5th...

I've contacted the dealer and told them of the problem with the turbo heat-shield (had the problem from purchase). They tell me it's a common fault and no rush to get it fixed - sound right ?
What makes me a little suspicious is that i very occasionally get a "burning hair" type smell when under boost.
Can anyone help put my mind at rest please ?
