Worrying noise from the engine
#1
Hi all,
Recently (last few weeks) I've noticed a strange noise coming from the engine area under certain conditions. It sounds like the grating / rubbing sound that a fan might make if the bearing was rubbing.
The sound occurs at a narrow rev-range between 3.5 and 4k rpm and is particularly noticeable on a trailing or steady throttle. I don't notice it when accelerating hard, but this could just be because the exhaust etc. is making more noise. There seems to be a similar noise, only quieter under gradual acceleration at around 2.5k rpm too.
I'm concerned that it could be the turbo, or possibly noise from the pistons since my car is a MY98 and there has been this recent talk of piston-slap.
I've checked the fluid levels in all the relevant places in the engine bay and can't see anything low.
The noise isn't particularly loud, but it is noticeable and I'm quite concerned about it. Anyone got any ideas if it's a problem and what it might be? Thanks in advance.

Sounds similar to my noise; a slight grating under idling when going up or down the gears.
Please can someone give advice!?
I've posted on two boards and 3 sections now with no response. Boohoo!!
Jon, waiting,......;-)

Oh I see, Mims is it? And you were pleading poverty about buying my suspension??!!
Anyway, I didn't properly understand what you were saying about the noise on your car. If it's when you are changing gear and there's kind of a "dry" graunching noise when the clutch is pressed, it could be the release bearing. What did you mean when you said it happens when idling, going up or down the gears?

I always plead poverty, so I have to sell my body! Any offers above £3.72 ?
The noise is not when I press the clutch, but when I have changed down or sometimes up a gear and then accelerate and then let off the throttle. Then i get the slight noise. Hmmmmm...... come on you Engine chaps!

Just been to the local dealer, and the very nice chap (Gary) who runs the service dept. reckons it is the heatshield. He's pretty sure in fact so they are going to have a look asap.
So there you go!
So there you go!
