Hello All

Well today I took my MY93 WRX in to have a Rolling road and checkover etc.

I have been told that my up-pipe is blowing and this will need to be replaced.

Also My turbo is spiing up quite late, 4,800 rpm in 1st,2nd and 3rd, in 4th and 5thn this is earlier around 4k ish

Now wieghing up my options:

Powerstation, Chelt did the check over and said a new uppipe from Subaru is 235, but why don't I just have a set of Equal length headers fitted instead, doing away with need for up-pipe, This comes in at 495 +VAT 120 fitting.. Ouch .. Only just bought the car!!! But seems a good idea...

Regarding the turbo spin up problem (note this has a P1 IHI RHF5 Turbo fitted which should I am told spin up quicker etc). When looking at the inlet fins they are worn but not knackered..

Could the fact the up-pipe is blowing cause this turbo spin up problem or do I just bite the bullet and get a new turbo fitted

Powerstation reccommend a VF34 Turbo for around 850 quid
or a MD190 Full Hybrid for 1175 or a VF29 for 1250 quid.. ouch too much on the last two... VF34 sounds good

Now just after buying car, money is a bit short, but I do want this sorted out asap so I can enjoy my new car ...

Options are: buy a S/H up-pipe and get fitted (is this an easy job to do on your driveway??? anyone!!!) and see if this is causing turbo problems and then get a turbo next year when there's more money around...

Regarding turbo recommened VF34, is this a good turbo, Advice on turbo choice would be very helpful

Any ideas and help in detail would be so helpful

Cheers

Rob

If you're up pipe is blown it will affect spool up, how much depends on how badly it's blown.

I think my up pipe cost about 90 quid.. IIRC
They are a bit annoying to fit, bolts break and the like, unless you have plenty tools and patients it's probably better to let someone else do the hard work.

It would also save time money and effort if the turbo was fitted at the same time as the up pipe, however if you're not sure it's gone...... that's a lot of money.

I assume you have a JDM car, and also have no idea about the turbo you are on about. The VF34 is the same as the one fitted to the P1 but with a slightly larger compressor.. i think (correct me if i'm wrong).

Have you considered a TD05, it's the same turbo as the earlyer UK cars and you can get one second hand for about £150, you will need a front entry conversion though, which costs £100 IIRC.

Hope this is of some help, i'm sure someone will correct any mistakes of mine too

BTW if you use equal length headers you will loose the scooby 'rumble'

Yeah get the up-pipe sorted first and then see if you still have the same problems

The blowing pipe has a huge impact on the Turbo! and power of your car

Re Up-pipe costs I think the Hayward and Scott pipe was about £!25 plus Vat..

Regarding Headers you should search on the site for the various posts on these

Same with Turbo's - to look at all the informed opinions - before committing to anything

If you opt for the PS headers make sure you ask them to 'Wrap' them otherwise you will lose more power due to heat soak, spool up may be effected and the headers are very close to some wiring........ if they say its not required - just ask them whose paying the bill?

I would get an after market up-pipe. Lateral Performance do a slipjointed affair, in stainless, that is about the best mix of value and functionality. I think it's about £130ish.

As people have said, blowing uppipe will kill spool up. For instance, blowing linkpipe on a car I have worked on, resulted in boost going from 22psi to 10psi.

A TD05 will drop straight onto your car as it is, without the need for the front entry conversion, so it will save you an awful amount of money compared with £800+ for a new VF.

The TD05 is the correct turbo for your car anyway, so you'd be better off with that.

Agree with the comments on upipes. I wouldn't be paying that for = length headers unless you need to/really want to.

Can't really see any benefit from replacing a TD05 with a P1 turbo. Spose the only gain would be a quicker spool up but the TD05 be superior beyond that

Cheers for all replies lads, keep em coming!!!

took car out for spin tonight, the blow from up-pipe isn't huge but its blowing..

in 1st and 2nd gear I can hear turbo spinning up but hits full boost 1.1 bar at 5K ish and no real kick in the *** to say

in 3rd gear it gets to max boost at about 4.5k - 4.7k

in 4th gear it gets to max boost at 4.2k

thats starting below 2k rpm and accelerating quite hard

When exactly should a TURBO kick in. ive been told about 3k ish and full power at 5K is this correct??

Regarding replacement up-pipe, if you know a link to a supplier for a MY93 please post, Ive looked at a few but all for MY98-

Any other advice on choosing turbo is so so needed too

Cheers all
