Question

I've got a 96MY Impreza Turbo with 35k miles on the clock which is spoilt by bad flatspots when accelerating hard in first gear and some occasional 'fluffiness' elsewhere when being pushed hard. Plugs are 5k miles old and had gaps reduced fron manufrs. recommended settings when being dynoed 4k miles ago by Power Engineering. This cured the problem then but its back and spoiling an otherwise great car - any tips/suggestions as to where I can get my Scoobie dealer to look at the next service at 37.5 k miles?

You probably need new coil packs ... £47 each plus vat, best replace them all as its very hard to decide which one is dodgy. What are your plug gaps set to ?

Terry,

don't know if you've seen the SIDC FAQ (http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.html), but this almost fits your symtoms too:-

"Waste Gate Solenoid can be noisy (clicking), and in extreme circumstances can cause sudden loss of power when accelerating hard - All Turbo"

If this sounds familiar, there are some suggestions on fixing it on the FAQ page.

Cheers,

Stephen

Bob, thanks for reply - plug gaps are now (or were!) 0.8 versus manufrs. recommended 1.0 to 1.1,
Terry

Stephen, Thanks for tip - I did look at the SIDC FAQ but have no clicking noise so assumed the problem was not turbo related - I'll think again!

The 1.0/1.1 plug gap is incorrect, should be 0.7/0.8. Suggest you set the gaps to a "tight" 0.7 mm and see if that improves it.What plugs have you got fitted ?

Bob,
Plugs are the replacement NGK's (original ones in handbook are no longer made} for PFR6G - I can't remember the new number - are these OK for my MY 96?
Regards,
Terry
