Simply put yes, more than one

If you want to take the trouble I would be happy to check out your car for you, then you can make your own mind up.You could hear for yourself to. (£200 sounds a bit too high for Knocklink etc )

The STi5 motors that we have listened to det, albeit mildly on 97 RON. You can hear the det with the headphones on and it shows the standard ECU has done all it can to avoid the det. A knock link will alert you to det but really you want a car that doesn't doit in the first place.

The ECU is stretched to its limits with 97 RON and so you are not releasing the best from your engine.

The other solution is install an ECU that can be mapped for UK fuel and then you do not have to worry about it again!

Question

One for Bob R and the Link Equipped boys...

not wanting to get sucked in to a debate on the longevity of sti5 engines but... with all this debate on 97 RON fuel etc. - has anyone actually seen/heard an sti5 engine knock on SUL (97 Ron) - if so - was this detected by the knocklink ?? - and - did the addition of octane booster actually make any difference.

anyone care to give us the real truth instead of a load of speculation?

On my KnockLink I have the first light which lights up to tell you the thing is working. I have never seen any other lights light up, Even had the dragon tapping the inlet manifold with differant spaners and toffee apple hammers. No light light up.
Hit the rev limiter in every gear, yes even 5th and no lights.
The car is a UK but is quite well tuned 283 BHP.

remember the knocklink needs to be calibrated..you cant just fit it and leave it.

thanks for the replies guys,

I am coming round to the idea of fitting the knocklink - for peace of mind if nothing else. Am still too mean to use octane booster until I can prove it really makes a difference though. Guess I will have to test this myself.

will revive this thread when I have it fitted and hopefully report back my findings.

Lee,

I have yet to come across anyone who does not have their KnockLink on maximum sensitivity. I have laso found that the location of the knock sensor has an effect on it's sesitivoty.... I started with mine on the fron of the manifold and it worked quite well. I *did* get the occasional det even on the JECS ECU [but I was running a cossie MAP sensor]. No lights would illuminate no matter how hard the engine was revved [other than the occasional det].

Having moved the sensor to the back of the manifold (to make way for an additional fule pressure regulator) I now get the first light coming on at high revs. Interesting.

Anyway, if it isn't possible to get the lights to illuminate try tapping the sensor's securing bold, *gently* and exactly along its axis, so as to setup a det noise without shaking the poor thing to bits. You should see lights illuminating. If you don't..... the KnockLink isn't working properly. Get it checked!

Paul,
Get Bob Rawle to check your car over.
He is IMHO the best in the business. He has sorted my STi5 and it is now safely mapped to 97 RON fuel (with NO det / knock).
The results can be seen on the dyno site : 305 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and 307 lb/ft @ 3,900 rpm!
