Can anybody help a very poor mean Subaru STI 3 owner, who in the next few months will need to replace his clutch?
Q 1. Do you remove the gearbox or engine? If it is the gearbox how do the drive shafts come out of the gearbox are there any major difficulties removing the box i.e. wiring Speedo cable or the like.
Q 2. I am told that a standard Legacy clutch is the same size and spline size, can the cover plate and thrust bearing be used.

Many thanks

Iain,
You can change the clutch on the Scooby with the engine in the car. You do, however, need to remove the gearbox.
Take off the intercooler, heatshield, starter motor, bulk head to engine stay (plastic) etc. from inside the engine bay - to give you access to the bell housing.
Then remove the downpipe and mid-section exhaust, then the prop shaft. You will need to remove the front drive shafts - this is a bit of a 2 man job, as one will need to pull the front wheels away from the car.
Disconect the gear lever linkage and undo the bell housing bolts. On the Scooby there are 2 long locating bolts at the bottom of the bell housing (these make the job of getting it all back together a whole lot easier).

After you have changed the clutch - remember to make sure that the gear linkage bushes are located properly. They can easily become dislodged.

The whole job should take you about 6 hours from start to finish.

Any one know any quicker ways???

Happy "Greasy" Xmas.
Tim

Hi Iain,

I can imagine the guy doing the work himself (slightly green of his ability/enthusiasm there!), but is he really thinking about using legacy bits in place of the STI clutch unit? Scary!

I have been told: There is a "design feature" in the sti 3 engine that means you shouldn't put a really heavy clutch in because there isn't quite the thrust bearing support you would want. Any of the STI uprated units should be ok, but the Helix units would cause problems, allegedly! Just thought it may be of interest to our sti 3 owning friend!

Anyway, you should be away for the new year now, so you probably aren't reading this, so blah blah blah!
