Question

After the intercooler hose problem and a coil failure I have the following problem:

Check Engine light comes on any time, with error 24 (Speed Sensor 2) or 33 (Idle Air Sensor). Engaging clutch whilst running and dropping the revs to <1000 clears the error. If I rev high (5K+) and let the clutch in the revs drop to ZERO and it stalls! What is causing this??

Help via email appreciated: phil_chard@dell.com

Cheers

Have you remembered to disconnect the two diagnostic connectors when you are driving?

Rannoch

Of course! (But I did forget a couple of times!) Now the car is fine and powerful (263bhp at PE) but the light still haunts me every now and then.

Oh, if anyone needs to know, its an MY94 WRX.

Cheers

If you leave the diagnostic connectors together when running the engine, the check engine light flashes constantly, so i doubt its that

The light is coming on for a reason, and only now and then. The thing that is worrying me is the engine drop-off to 0 revs from 4K+. The ECU isn't handling this well. I've reset it a couple of times as well. Maybe the idle air solenoid?

Pilch, again not easy to diagnose at a distance.

First stop resetting the ecu, it is adaptive and may sort itself out, reset just forces it to start again.

The errors you see are caused by the fact that the engine dies, they may indicate the fault or may be a reaction to another fault.

Certainly the air idle valve is a suspect but, it seems to idle ok most of the time ?

Speed sensor 2 is to do with the speedo, if its dodgy the engine wont run well above 4k (I think) as it goes into limp home mode. Check its all connected ok.

You may still have a vac leak somwhere, check all your boost controlpipes for loose joints, splits etc.

The fact that the light goes out means its intermittant and to do with revs or vacuum

Sorry I cannot be more specific.
