just wondering if u can help me out lads/lasses

i am currently thinkin bout buyin a scooby wrx. i have looked at it and the bodywork is mint. But the only prob i have with it is that the engine makes a knockin noise (tappet or valve slap)My m8`s car both do this im just wonderin if it is a common thing and also is it bad?

Tappets on early scoobs can be a little noisy, Sometimes a good quality engine flush & oil change can help quieten them.
Alteratively new shims which is not cheap...
YOu should be able to tell if it is something more sinister, Like top end rattle, , Bottom end etc as it will be more profound & make you cringe when reved higher than tick over..
Otherwise Tappet noise is quite common.

the noise is only really there between 1k-2k revs goes away after that. been told bout a cam adjuster or summit??

I have a tapping tappet at idle on a 94 WRX RA.

"Working as intended" seems to be right.. im not worried.

 

i have been told now that it could be piston slap :-o. i have just been put off now. so i am lookin around again

my 96 wrx now has a tappeting noise since my last sevice so I am putting down to the oil they used, I don't know what it was, I am looking at changing it this weekend, hopefully thats the problem.
