Whining
#1
Please be gentle with your replies !
My MY94 WRX RA has developed an unnerving sound..... Under acceleration and as boost pressure increases a whining noise can be heard that increases as the boost preasure does. It is more noticeable under strain, eg if you accelerate from low revs in 5th.
Any ideas ?
Many thanks
Martin

Yes only when developing boost. No induction kit or after market dump valve.
Are there any other signs that the turbo has died eg. smoke etc.
Does anyone know how much a fix will cost approx ?

MY96 WRX has had a whining noise since I had it at 2K miles. Now done 15K miles and it's still doing it, no better, no worse. But it happens under light throttle and through the whole rev range, not strain or load related.
Check the turbo bearing oil stick. Is the oil clean and silky? Should be. Keep an eye on it. If it get's brown/black, there's some serious problems developing IMHO !! Incidentally, does anyone know what oil Subaru recommend in there??
When I spoke to Merv at PE he sugested that debris might have come into contact with impeller blades kinking one or more of them, resuling in the noise. He said unless you get clouds of black smoke from the exhaust not to worry about it. But I have saved up the cash just in case !!!
On the subject of Turbos, anyone fitted a different unit to the WRX rather than the OEM one? What about Garret (sp?) ??
