Blitz Nur Spec exhaust - a report

Hi,
Been running around with a prototype Blitz Nur Spec for the last couple of
weeks and wanted to give you some feedback on it. The first thing to say is
that PE refused to sell the previous incarnation of this exhaust as it was
too loud for the UK!
OK. MY car is a UK spec MY96 Saloon with a Prodrive Performance Pack fitted
so this includes the Prodrive backbox. I have a K&N filter fitted instead of
the Prodrive one (Ramair?) 'cos the previous owner had a standard Subaru one
fitted.... PE did the fitting when it was in for a 60K service (so the car
is well run in...) and they did a dyno run before and after.
The Blitz exhaust is very well made and has one of those 5" Max Power type
end pipes - the other half thought the Prodrive one was a little Max Power
so this one nearly made her dump me there and then! (And I can't even knock
her car as she has a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo). Oh, it fits from the downpipe back so you zap the middle cat.
Before figures: max power: c 243bhp
max torque: c. 232lbft
After figures: max power: 257bhp
max torque: c 238lbft
What these figures don't show (and I have emailed Mr. Strong with the files
so they can go on the web site) is the increase in torque from about 2500 to
4500. For example at 3500rpm the torque has increased by about 20lbft - and
you feel this on the road mainly in the fact that the turbo seems to spin up
more quickly. But not exactly a kick in the pants upgrade.
BUT lets get back to the noise... some people will love this exhaust note
but, for day to day driving, it's a pain to me. It starts to resonate at
about 2500 until about 3500 (when the turbo is up to speed) when it becomes
much more civilised (read - sporty) and really sounds very nice. However, my
commuting means I don't see these revs too often in the week. Also, on the
overrun, when I guess the dump valve opens, the resonance returns.
All in all it does what it is suppose to do - increases power and torque
but, for me anyway, it does so at the expense of 'anonimity'.
Cheers
Dave

Dave,
If this was the exhaust freeby from Race-logic - you just beat me to it!!! (grrr!)
I'm still tempted though - what's the resonance like - does it sound really bad or is it quite cool? I know the old model was ridiculously loud, how loud is this one? If i'm not being too cheeky i wouldn't mind a listen (if you're not a million miles away - i live in High Wycombe)??
Also - does the backbox hang low under the car ie will it get scraped on speed bumps?
Cheers

I tried the original Blitz exhaust at PE. It only took me 5 minutes driving it to realise it had to go. Prior to that it had a blitz back box and K&N. Interestingly whilst the backbox only option was identical in routing to the STI unit the full system wasnt. It didnt exit straight either and took a hour just to try to hang it without it banging.
In addition the noise was unbearable. Nice sound but on long journeys !!. The other thing to bear in mind is if you intend to do track days, will it pass the noise test.
We did a dyno run before and after. Compared to the backbox only it lost power below 4500 (approx 12 bhp and lbft), but gained above that, but only a maximum of 8bhp and lbft. If my memory serves me right.
The interesting thing would be to take this system off and just use a backbox and see how it compares.
The best combination Ive seen so far is PE full exhaust inc downpipe. That gained 48lbft lowdown.

I've just fitted a Blitz Nur-Spec full system to my car, and agree it is very noisy, but that's with the removable silencing pipe removed. It's not an Impreza, but it's the same exhaust as that available for the Impreza so I would have thought this silencing pipe was standard. With it fitted the noise is totally bareable, but without it it's bloody loud!

Dave has returned the exhaust to us. So it's up for grabs again.
Contact Julian Thomas @ Racelogic (www.racelogic.co.uk) to get your hands on it. All you need to do is pay for delivery and arrange to have it fitted.
It doesnt come with the silencer pipe, though there is no reason why one cant be fitted later.
