Just had a look caz thought I was right about that torque. the best torque wrench I`ve found is the latest one snap-on is doing.Digital read out that tells you exactly how much torque your appliying and how much you go over. Must admit thou I`ve never had to replace any of the m6`s before.

Sorry to implie your settings are muddled up it`s just on an earlier post you do state lb/ft instead of newton meters.

Question

Are these re-usable ?

Just finished refitting the heads and started to insert the camshaft but as we torqued the 1st bolt for the bearing cap we heard a creeking noise. We removed the bolt to find it had stretched the thread so near to sheering in the block. We then removed the other bolt to find it was also going the same way. We double checked the setting with the manual and both were correct (14lb-ft) so we have halted the rebuild. Can this be the case that you must replace these ? Any advice appreciated.

If it's the end cap, those bolts are crap, and the torque settings way too high. Maybe they would be okay with no oil and first application, but I think they are suspect.

In all honesty, the best bet is to torque them by feel, you should be able to get a good idea, as the bolts nip up, then just a little bit more.

The m8 bolts on the outisde of the engine block ar ethe same, the 24ft-lbs or whatever the recommmended torque is, just stretches them.

The cam caps that are under the cam cover are much better quality bolts, and I've had no real problems with those, but still be cautious.

Cheers Paul,

I posted on the NASIOC forum last night and someone posted a pic from a different manual to tell me there are 2 torque settings.

The big bearing caps (the ones that have stretched) are now torqued to 10lb-ft and the internal ones 20lb-ft and not all at 20lb-ft as per the manual we had. Anyway, we ordered 8 new bolts from Subaru today, should arrive tomorrow morning 10am

that setting sounds to high, the setting`s i have are 20nm for the m8 and 10nm for the m6. It`s easy to get nm and lb/ft muddled up. The evidence is there if your stretching bolts. Hope this helps.

Wink

We never got the settings muddled up.

The diagram on the NASIOC forum does clearly state 2 different settings for different caps.

Our manual only shows one (the higher setting )

See pic here

Don't suppose you can post the part number for the m6s on the end bearing caps?

I need some, after the same error.
