Short block: usually crank, pistons & block
long block: comes with above & usually heads, oil pump & water pump....(no manifold, alternator etc)
Though best to check with the seller & specifically ask what the block comes with.....

so it's not actually siza as such, just what components it comes with? so i can't just say"can i buy an engine please?" and they would give me what's under the bonnet?

If you wanted to buy an engine; if you called many suppliers they would need a Vin number to ensure th right engine was obtained....
Though make sure you ask the question "What comes with it!!!"
