Steve do you know how noisy dog boxes are? You won't like it. They whine worse than Abby on about his headers!

Steve, to give more idea of what a dog box will sound like, watch the in-car stuff when the RallyGB is on telly. The noise wont be as bad as those rally cars, but it won`t be far off i`d have thought

Question

The gearset that Mark supplies can handle 450lb/ft!

1st gear is straight cut
2nd & 3rd are semi, 3rd sounds nice
4th and 5th are normal, so no crusing noise

That's not quite correct Mark. It's misleading to say that dog boxes whine (and thus by implication that synchro ones don't).

You seem to be implying that the dog gearchange mechanism itslelf causes whine. The reason most dog boxes whine is because most of them are designed for competition purposes, and are thus fully straight cut with tooth profiles designed for strength and ultimate efficiency rather than low noise.

If you happened to have a fully straight cut synchro box, it would whine just as badly as a dog box with the same gear design in it. Similarly, it's eminently possible to get hold of "quiet" dog box if you wanted one.

Incidentally the dog gearchange mechanism does cause a characteristic noise, they're prone to shunt and backlash when coming on and off the power, while if you get the change wrong, it'll make an altogether nastier sound.

Mr Emery, how much extra strength do you need? As I'm sure Mr Wallis will tell you, the STi six speed box is engineered considerably better than the five speeder. If you don't need/want to go to the lengths of the Lateral gearset or any similar alternatives, the STi 'box would appear to be a worthwhile option to explore.

Exclamation

I'm sure that a six speeder will be a more expensive route the box itself must cost at least 3 grand and thats without all the rest of the hassle

Then the problem you get with the six speeder with high powered cars is that the gearing then becomes too short

lots of power and sensible gearing is the way to go unless your going rallying
