Whilst driving home my gearbox started to make a very unhealthy noise in third. It is a metallic rattle that appears to have a revolution to it. 1st & 2nd gear seems fine car drives no noise. Tried 4th & 5th both made the same type meatallic noise & car struggle to move had to select 2nd & cruise slowly home. Needless to say I haven’t driven it since!
I am able to select 1st,2nd & reverse gear without a problem and the car is fine when freewheeling but as soon as you touch the accelerator the noise begins.
Car is a 95 WRX STi II but I think the box is a ra box
I suppose if it is shagged. Can i fit any import box sti/wrx/ra year
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mate,
I'm no rocket scientist but that sounds shagged. The synchromesh could have gone but then you wouldn't be able to select the gears at all (unless you matched engine revs like Schumacher). My brother in law had a similar problem - he had no gearbox oil at all and the gears welded together !! Needless to say a new gearbox and clutch was needed.
Not much help, but be prepared to spend some cash because even investigating the problem may result in the engine coming out.

I pretty certain too its fcuked, just done quick search & from the threads ive just read its sounds like time to dig deep into my bank balance .
Couldnt find much info on jap boxes sti/wrx & ra & compatibility with diffs. From what little I no uk & jap ratio are different so each has to have the same box & diff.
Can you use any jap box & any jap diff together or does ra box have to go with ra diff etc.
