Hi there
i have a 1998 impreza sport (non-turbo)
oil is leaking from the timing belt cover onto the undertray and exhaust causing smoke......
can you please tell me what could be leaking behind the cover and if they are hard/expensive jobs?
many thanks

Sounds like it could be front crank seal.Cheap to replace but requires taking cambelt off so you will have to get a new cambelt .

Just because the cambelt has to come off doesn't mean it needs replacing!!!

I've identified a crank seal leak today and the chap who is going to repair it ( Subaru mechanic ) is not replacing mine as it was only put on 4000 miles ago on my turbo.

Only replace if it's near to the exchange period.

Skoosh.

could also be a camshaft oil seal, mine went about 2 wks ago and set the exhaust alight.
was the lower right hand side seal (exhaust cam).

i got the seal from the subaru dealer for £5.50

job took me about 40mins, i refitted the same cambelt as its only done about 6/7000 miles.

cheers
ian

p.s. to check the cam seals, look between the spokes on the pulleys, my seal was just sat on the cam rather than in its recess in the cylinder head.
