Angry

Well i've had my RB5 for 23 days now, and its very poorly.

Ive been listening to sound files and reading what people have said and my cars got bl00dy Piston Slap and the tappets are tapping there **** off, more so when the engines warm, ive got a 12 month subaru warranty so i'll be paying them a visit, hopefully they'll sort it out.

Does anyone know if eating 1/2 litre of oil every 3 weeks, which is 600 miles or so is excessive??
Its a MY99 RB5 with PPP, full de-cat, Forge VTA and ITG panel filter, currently topping it up with Mobil1 motorsport

Thanks in advance for any advice

Just realised the tappets are knocking since adding 1/2 litre of Mobil1 Motorsport 15/50.
Does this sound weird to you, it does to me!!
I bought the mobil1 after doing a search on here and reading peoples recommendations about it

Can anyone help/advise me on this please??

In the early days of ownership with my car, i switched to Mobil Motorsport oil (approved by dealer)and found my car to use this oil. It didn't smoke or give any indication whatever, but used it at a rate of about a litre every 1000miles. At the next service i reverted back to Shell Helix and consumption between services was negligible. Used Shell until the end of warranty.

I've since for the last year or so, been on Motul oil and never used a drop.

Not knocking Mobil as i believe there are many people who probably use to great effect, but that was my experience.

A litre every 600miles is a bit much IMO, but depends on level of tune, if any.

Well, excessive oil consumption can be the result of piston slap - as the bore wears oval thus giving poor oil control etc. But I'm yet to hear it mentioned on a scoob.

IMO that level of oil-consumption is not good. I run a well and truly knackered Land Rover V8 which uses less oil than your scoob

A Subaru warranty claim might be tricky will a full decat and VTA. But I'm not an expert...

If your going to take off modded parts then I'd also change your usename to something less obvious.
All it takes is IM to look at this post and know who you are!!

Re-read your original post. I assume the mods (other than PPP) came with the car. If so then you must be covered with mods attached if they gave you an IM warranty.

Do I have it right? 1/2= .5litre or do you mean 1 to 2litres.
If you are using 1 or two litres then you have a problem.
If it is half a litre in 600mls then things may not be too bad. Try an oil and filter change and use Motul 300V 15W-50.
Can you see oil being burned out the exhaust, blue smoke. (fuel on hard acceleration is black)
Try this test. Get the car warmed up then find a good bit of road, preferably down hill and from pretty high revs in fifth leave the car on the over-run for as long as possible, 10secs or more if possible. As the revs drop from say 6k rpm to around 2.5k rpm floor the throttle and look in your rear view mirror. Alot of blue smoke and you are burning oil. Visit your dealer. No blue smoke and you are probably O.K.
Let us know.

well if its under the warranty still then they have to sort it out, maybe change any mods u have done engine wise back to how u bought it off them, then they cant use the ol "its the modificatio0ns u have done that has caused this!!!"

good luck and let us know the outcome.

o btw i use Magnatec oil in mine, the thinner (5W/40) seemed to get a used bit, but the 10W/40 has been fine, checked regualry it hasnt moved on the dipstick.

Well i visited them this morning, very helpful young lady booked it in for 4th of next month leave it overnight for them to have a look at it.
I bought the car with a full de-cat already on it Forge VTA's no prob to take off even thought theres no way in a million years it could affect it/cause piston slap.

I meant .5 of a ltre of oil sorry and i have 'given it beans' and i can see no black smoke out of the exhaust.

We'll wait and see....

Oh and with the PPP it is supposed to have a ITG panel filter fitted but somewhere along the line it got replaced with a subaru paper filter so i just reverted it back to how it should be.

If you're burning oil it'll be blue out the back. If you are running rich it'll be black.

If you've got both....get rid of the f***ing thing!! Only kiddin'

Unhappy

Well myself and my mate who is a mechanic have had a good look/listen round the car and now and i've found:

Piston Slap
Tappets very noisy more so when engine is upto temperature
Rear diff has fluid on it, might be overspill where its been filled up might be where its leaking
Gearbox has a intermitant whining noisy to it, might be the rear diff low on oil
Front brakes need replacing very soon due to a massive lip on the front discs
Had to top the oil upto max yet again so thats 3/4 litre of oil disapeared in 25 days, can't see any blue smoke from the exhaust

I'm not a happy chappy, told the dealer i'm seriously considering rejecting it, speaking to the director on Thursday which happens to be the 30th day from when i bought it.
Gutted....

The Impreza is a bit of an oddball when it comes to checking the oil level IMO.
The only time i check it is when it has been standing overnight and has had several hours to drain back to sump.

Leaving it for say half an hour then checking doesn't always give a true reading that i have found.

Check it today, take note and re-check tomorrow morning before firing it up and on level ground.

Still think there might be some indication of usage somewhere by what you are saying, either out the exhaust or by a leak.

Yeah i do check my oil every morning when its been stood for 10 hours or so, found that out after doing a search.
Theres no oil drip on the drive or on the undertray, i can see no oil around then engine so it must be coming out of the exhaust!! Trouble is i'm concentrating on the road rather than the rear view mirror when driving.
Still gutted....

You can check this by touching the exhaust on the inside at the back of the car. If you take a little scoop with your finger, then rub it with your fingers and it feels moist, sort of sticky, it means that oil is coming out the exhaust cos there are oily deposits left on there. If it feels dry its OK.

Cheers,

George.

From what ive heard, this doesnt sound like piston slap.
There have been no proven cases of piston slap on the phase 2 engine, even those who have claimed this, it has been proven to be something else (the cambelt tensioner or the likes).
The tappets on the other hand could be a serious problem.....
Depending on which oil the garage has used (hopefully not the 5w30 shell helix which will make your engine sound very tappy due to it being too thin, refer to owners handbook for explenation) or you having over filled the oil (it sits at a very funny position on the dipstick, not quite where you would expect it to) then id say you would have every reason to reject this car (unless they can fix all the faults under warranty).
Ive an MY00, 34.5k, never used one bit of oil (ive ran mobil 1 motorsport 15w50 and motul 300v 15w50) so this is what you should be aiming for, but if overfilled it will put considerable strain on parts of your engine due to oil pressure....

Ah, a quick one for you about the ITG filter, get rid of it, the paper filter was and still is the only one that subaru uk and Prodrive have fitted to the PPP, this was never an option on the MY99/00's or newer PPP's, it was only on the MY97/98 cars which had this, due to a more sensitive MAF sensor in the phase 2 engine (and id doubt that the VTA is doing your scoob much good either as the PPP ecu isnt mapped to handle this and could in the worst case cause the fuelling to lean out when dumping).

Thanks for that mate, i've listened these sound files http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alan.leslie/ after doing a search on here and it sounds exactly like that when its cold and sort of dissapear after 5mins, but theres still a faint knocking sound when warm, would be able to hear it properly if my tappets wer'nt tapping there **** off!!!

If it was a tensioner it would do this all the time would'nt it??
