Question

Has any1 modified the LED's on the knocklink so that the circuit board LED's are at 90 degrees to their factory location.

Attempting to locate the AFR meter & Knocklink LED's behind the my DIY classic gauge pod

Cool

I have so far modified 4 Knocklinks, hiding the main box behind the dash and mounting the LEDs on a tiny little remote PCB. They are very successful and look 100's better.

Don't overheat the IC, though, when soldering.

No. Standard LEDs ~2.85v as normal. Remember to get the polarity right!!! +ve rail, -ve to IC.

I have taken my leds out and atatched to some wire and put them into the instrument binacle, they really catch your eye now when they light up.

I tend to put an 6 pin socket mounted in the knocklink, and a little piece of vero-board with the cable wired to it.
Keeps the LEDs in check and prevents any nasty short outs, especially as the LEDs are common +ve

Unless you have a DCCD car the most elegant placement is in the instrument binnacle itself.

The binnacle (on the late Classics, and I guess the older/newer cars are similar) has moulded spaces and tracks on the circuit board for seven LED's/lights.

It's fairly simple to utilise these for either AFR meter, KnockLink or both. I have four AFR meter and two KnockLink LED's installed, with the AFR meter and KL circuit boards fixed to the back of the instrument panel and feeding the display via a short length of ribbon cable - through which they are also powered.

With the instrument panel fascia neatly cut and an inlay panel put in, it looks very neat - could easily be mistaken for OE.

That's OK 'til you do a track day, the double apex onto the back straight at dono (amongst many others) is at such an angle that the steering wheel spokes hide the whole dash while on full throttle all the way through the bend (and a gear change).... less than ideal, mines in a remote display on top of the dash.

Mines currently mounted at eye level in the A-Pillar. It's fine until it's sunny, then you can't see it so well.

Planning to locate the AFR at the top of the heater vents (as a single colour bar rather than a row of LEDs) and considering mounting the knocklink in the steering wheel.

I replaced the leds in my knocklink with 5mm hi-bright clear ones and mounted them in my a-pillar. Even in bright sunshine I can see them light up (first 3 anyway at 7000rpm)

I mounted mine in the cupholder. I always find the red led gets my attention in the same way as staring at the sun through a telescope does.....

Question

Is the positive leg common and negative leg switched on the LED's?

Yep. Which means if you want to put yours in your dash (as above) you can simply use a bit of Cat5 network cable.
Best bet is to connect this to a PCB shaped for your requirements.

Will dig out some pics.

The dashboard Knocklink looks WAAY cool.

Question

How visible is that during the summer days, bottomfeeder?
Does it suffer from glare at night?

I tucked them back far enough that they seem to be sheilded from sunlight glare. It appears to work very well.

Cool!

Am looking at moving mine from A-pillar, so this could be a good option for me!

Are there any companies out there that can do this job professionally? I'd have a go myself but my DIY skills leave a little to be desired.....
I seem to remember scoobymania were, once upon a time, looking at doing a neat little remote display - anyone know anything about that?
I like the idea of fitting them in the dash where the DCCD display should be

Turbo_Steve's done 3 Knocklink installations thus far and makes a spanking good job of it.

He's not in business, so there's no warranty but those whose KL's he's modified are very happy with them and they look 1000s better than the huge box stuck in the car.
