Unhappy

After some serious 1/4mile action yesterday the car has developed a nasty whine in first gear

I was very brutal on a couple of launches (read as: sidestepped clutch and wheelspin), what do you think I may have done?

When coasting in 1st (on or off the clutch) there is a very loud whining noise coming from the box, can be heard inside and outside the car, I thought it was the diff at first but the whine is only happening in 1st gear. The gear itself feels fine though, can drive with it, even give it a little stick..... the car was hopping a little when launched hard after the whine had developed though.

Not that bothered about it as I dont tend to use first gear much on the road, could this lead to other problems?

Stripped gear? Knackered bearings?

Cheers

Paul

Sounds like a possible mainshaft bearing. Thats why it is always more beneficial to not put all the power down untill the car is actually moving, instead of giving it death off the line from standing.

Change the oil now and see what comes out. Look at the magnetic drain plug if you have one to see what has stuck to it. Do not be too alarmed as there is always a bit of swarf/iron filing build up but you are looking for larger bits of metal.
Use a good quality oil 75W/90.
Your box could go on to operate indefinately, even with a noisey first gear.

i have the same symptons in my MY98 UK. after i fitted an AP clutch i gave it some welly on some hard starts - one too many and it started to whine as does yours (however not when the clutch is engaged)

anyway, changed the oil to syntrax, found some fine filings on the plug as expected.

still whines, but im happy and not bothered
