Big End Failure - Advice Please
Current estimates on my Chronically Ill Scoob (per previous thread)is that no.4 big end has gone due to oil starvation - system failure not due to failure to keep oil res at proper level before you say so! Given that this is a 25 k miles V-plate (out of warranty, of course) I think this is pretty pony, and the dealer, and some of the scoobynet technical threads, suggest that this is a generic problem. I'm seriously thinking that I can't afford to spend serious money twice over when it happens again (no choice this time) and i'll hvae to sell the f****r and get s'thing more boring once it's fixed. That's a nightmare scenario but what other choice do i have? Don't even ask how much it's going to cost at the dealer BTW....
If its out of warranty, why get the dealer to do it. There are plenty of Subaru specialists out there that don't charge dealer labour rates, but use Subaru parts (or something better

Andy - it's Prodrived but that doesn't invalidate it, it's just run out (MY00)
Stuart - thanks very much for the tip. My concern is really that this could happen again and i simply can't afford to pay for it again. Do you think using a non-dealer to do the work would affect the resale? (I haven't actually decided to flog it yet BTW..)

That happened to mine, Get it fixed and get an oil pressure gauge fitted. Oh and make sure your oil is always at the top notch!
If you can afford it get steel rods in there too (i snapped a rod shortly after the big end repair.)

You will save a lot of money getting the engine rebuilt at an independant specialist. They use the same parts as a dealer. Once it's rebuilt you need to find out why it failed, too many stories of people rebuilding then blowing them again because they didnt fix the fault that caused it. MAF sensors and Fuel pumps are common reasons for the engine to fail.

Aye, My big end failure was due to faulty oil pump.. which i would have noticed if i had an oil pressure gauge.
To my knowledge snapping a con rod is just plain old metal fatigue, i suspect the previous owner gave it some proper boot.

BlueE9, Ian was due to come and pickup your car but his wife went into labour and that was that! When Dave got back from Malta he found out what happened but has been unable to contact you because he hasn't got your number. If you are still interested please give him a call and he will re-arrange picking your car up.

Blue,
I had a similar failure earlier in the year that was due to an oil pressure problem. I shopped around for the best prices and can highly recommend Scoobyclinic. They did a cracking job with my rebuild at a very cost-effective price, plus did some paintwork. Give Kev a call on 01246 590807 and chat it through with him.
Good Luck!
