hi guys can you advise me?!?! i got jap wrx 1993 and my ecu says i need a new lambda sensor. ordered one from halfords today but told them it has two wires - was i right? i got a black 1 and a red/black wire - these are at the top where a white connector joins them to the wires running to the sensor - they are covered in a metal sleev so dont know what colour they are - presume they match as it looks original.

When I had my remap, 1 month ago, my lambda sensor was packing in. I bought a £30 generic one from my local autofactors and stuck it in........job done. Now, however, there seems to be a problem. Instead of one LED sweeping up and down on my AFR gauge, sometimes 6 or 7 are lit at a time and sweeping up and down. For the last 3 weeks, it behaved as normal. This seems to happen more after a blast, and after I was on a dyno yesterday. I'm a bit worried as to whats going on.......what do you think? Cheap O2 sensor packing up? Problem in the map? Ideas appreciated.

Cheers,

Pete

Oxygen sensors don't like being overheated, they read lean in this situation, and when they're failing. If your remap runs extra boost/timing, it may well be the generic sensor cannot handle the higher temps. For safety check your MAF out too, as a failing MAF can cause genuine lean running (what mine's doing now, picking up replacement today)

Cheers

I also had a new MAF at the remap so I doubt this is going. Would I be right in thinking then that the OE equipment O2 sensor is designed to cope with higher temperatures? If so, it looks like an expensive trip to Subaru. Thanks.

There are two different types of lamda sensor available. You must use the correct one that is compatible with jap systems.
They are Zirconia and Titania (different materials used in the core),i am not sure which is the correct one to use but i am sure if your original had a RED wire then the replacment must have the same. Most universal lamda's DO NOT have the red wire!!.

Thanks for the help. Original had white and black wires only, as does the replacement.

Took it out last night, re-crimped AND soldered all the connections and it seems to be fine again. I think there was resistance in the connections I had made. I'll see if it stays correct, if not i'll get an OE one.

Cheers,

Pete

Have a look on your old one ..some OE ones were made by BOSCH and NGK and are available from good motor factors at a fraction of the cost from Subaru.

MS, just had a look via our Bosch cats & they only list on Impreza Turbo to 96'

If the replacemnt is a 3 wire, Bosch aftermkt no. should be 0258 986 502 or LS02, this has a 7OHM heater unit which basically reaches closed loop operation faster, so if u have fitted a std 3 wire lambda may be a diff in the response time to the ECU.

I may need a new lambda for my MY94 WRX wagon, as it was only just in the range on the mot ( was over 1.0 ) and struggled to pass emissions ( HS and CO IIRC ) - was running over 1 % HC at first - this with a std. downpipe and cat ( although no centre ). Now has uneven idle and hunts when the fans come on.

Looked at sensor, it is positioned in offside header and has 3 wires - red, white, black.

Found here useful http://www.lambdasensor.com/cgi-bin/...62855524.13500

Can't seem to find one of these at motor factors, RCM quoted over £200 for genuine one ( ex Japan ! ).

Q. Will the item listed in post above be the one I need? Once I get the part no. I should be able to order one from one of the local motor factors.

Also, could I move the lambda from the header to the downpipe, as the cat free downpipe has a boss for the lambda which is unused ... would the ECU understand it still if position moved, and would it be the same sensor?

Thanks

Neil
