it's a safety device which displays any knock or det your engine may produce. Do a search on here for it mate.

If you are getting an sti from Japan be aware that they are mapped for higher octane fuel than UK cars. Japan get decent high octane fuel, we don't. Your car will be set (ECU settings) to run happily on high octane fuel, if you put UK (lower octane) fuel in it may be dangerous to your engine (in the form of det or knock, hence knock link).

Minnimum you want to research about is knocklink and octane booster. And also look into a remap.

If it was me I would pay the money to get my ECU remapped on an sti, it would be a lot cheaper than a rebuild Basically a mapper could change timing etc to allow the running of UK fuel SAFELY for your engine.

Sorry to scare you mate, but if it were me I'd deffinately get a remap. Minimum octane booster an knocklink.

Do some searches and read into it.

James is 100% spot on, just a pity he didn't speak to me 30 months ago, cause just last week my engine on my 95 WRX expired dropping no4 piston, now the engine is getting lifted out the car to strip down repair & rebuild.

Best bit of advise is also consider using octane booster on every fuel fill-up.

Caz1562 feel for you big time m8.

Just spent 9k on an STi 4, lovely condition. Though drove home & the big end went.

First feking night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyhow Scooby Clinic repaired, cost 2k. Quite a tough pill to swallow. And before you ask I haven't managed to free the previous owner of any cash. Miserable feker.

So here I am running in for first thou. Putting in Optimax at the mo but intend to use with something like Millers booster when free reving.

Not sure with this combo if I need Knocklink, but to play it safe would probably be the best option.
