Third gear went bang
#1
Has anyone had the same problem ? I have a 95wrx and third gear went today for the second time in 14000 miles,i had a full rebuild with a new third forth and a second syncro only two years ago,i would have expected it to last longer, the car is running 343lb of torque.

Mattt - thats so anoying! when did it go? on the way back home?
take it there is just big crunch noises now!?!
think the only thing you can do is go for one of those unbreakable sets ... @ ££££££££££ !
best of luck getting it sorted..

Would take to long to list mods but i have a 2.2 stroke kit with motec running 1.4 bar boost on a standard TD05 is there a strong box that will take big power because a new turbo is coming soon so the torque is going up ?And yes lots of cruncy noises, lucky i was close to home.

My third gear went within a week of running a TD05 at 1.5 bar on a 2.0, and I had been quite nice to third gear, particularly refining my technique as the power went up to protect it, but it was a UK box. Get an uprated gear kit to expect it to last IMHO. The kit I've gone for is guaranteed for 450 BHP and 400 lbft and I intend to run it at that. It is a Chalak/PAR synchro kit which replaces gears 1-4, from Lateral Performance. Cost is about £2k plus the build and any bits you need from the previous box letting go. It is noisier, esp 1st which sounds a bit like reverse, 3rd gear looks much stronger when you see them side by side. Stock 5th is retained, there is a choice of ratios. I only did 100 miles with it at low loads so have not properly tested it yet, others have put this kit through a lot more abuse.
No other synchro gearkit manufacturers were quoting 400lbft limits. Quaife do a syncro kit, as do Possum Bourne and now APS.
