Hi,

Has anyone else had this problem?? This has only just started over the last couple of days. Car is MY03 WRX bought 3 weeks ago as an ex demo car with 6K miles. Got just over 7 on it now.

Accelerating to the top of 2nd gear, shift into 4th and get a really nasty crunch on the way into the gear. At first i thought, '****, must not have had the clutch right in there.'

Anyway, it's happened a few more times today, but now it's happening from 3rd to 4th under acceleration.

Anyone got any ideas??

yeah had the same prob on my wrx, typically 2 weeks after the warranty ran out.
turned out to be the pressure release plate. had to change the whole clutch though.

Why are you changing straight from second to fourth?

If it's happening more and more, sounds like you're either being a little rough, or the box has dodgy syncros in it.

did u say the car has only 6 miles on it or 6k miles?.

Had a problem on my MY03 wrx changing from 4th to 5th above 4,000 revs - took it back to the dealer and they did a 5th gear synchro mod. Sweet as anything now.

Well if its got 6 miles on and your going to the top in 2nd (i take it you mean 7k rpm) you wonder why it gets crunched?
Ahhhhhh no wonder people think running in periods are just for the engine

I can only presume/hope that he actually means the car had 6,000 miles on it, and now has just over 7,000...

Whoah, don't get excited. I meant 6K miles, which from the context of the question is obvious i.e car was bought as an ex demo.


As for why i'm going from 2nd to 4th that's because i'm getting to cruising speed at the top end of second gear e.g accelerating onto a motorway. I'm then going straight to 4th rather than 3rd, then immediately 4th. It's called block changing. you can go from any gear to pretty much any other as long as the revs and road speed are right.

Anyway, i'm not being rough on it. My gear changes are usually very, very smooth ( aided by the 6 hours i spent recently in my CTR with a police driving instructor)

I thought it may have been a synchro problem, but wanted to know whether anyone else had the problem.

Doesn't matter what it's called, it's bad practice, with any car, not just an Impreza.

"Jumping" gears like this gives the synchro and clutch twice as much to do equalising the shaft/engine rotation speeds. In return of course you're reducing wear on third, but the tradeoff isn't worth it.

If you're "getting to cruising speed at the top of second", you're also revving the bolx off it. Much better to accelerate through all the gears, keeping the revs in the middle of the band rather than going straight from one extreme to the other...

as regards to "block changing" this is taught to poeple when they are learners now.It is'nt bad practice/driving if for e.g you are in 3rd at 60 you could change straight to 5th as this is then your cruiseing speed or it would mean changeing from 3rd to 4th then to 5th 4th gear doing nothing at all for you as you would be changeing straight back out of it

i was taught this 14 years ago by my driving instructor,can not see a problem going up the box.

I have exactly the same problem too, its going in to the garage on sept 8th to have the gearbox taken to bits. I was told that the syncro had gone on 4th gear, it does sound awful.

Block changing is NOT bad practice, it's the way i was taught to drive in my first licence, advanced licence and when i recently did the MAC course that's available when you buy a Civic Type-r. I believe the traffic police also drive like this.
