Hi There,

I have a MY99/00 Impreza Turbo 5Door.

I am running a full decat system with a JB postal TEK 2.5 remap.

I am only getting at a amaximum 220 mpg using nothing but optimax!!!!!!!

Granted this is driving around town with no cruising on the motorway at all, but howay like, 220 miles?

Is there something wrong with my car or is this normal.

ps my car is only ever driven at weekends.

pps car has started under heavy acceleration in third gear when up to say 5000rpm i get what sounds like a misfire, just a quick one, but it is noticeable.................any ideas please?

Hi Michael,

You should get rather more than that, but it depends on the sort of town driving you mean.

The ECU uses standard Subaru ignition and fuelling (closed loop) for gentle usage so will behave like standard in these areas.

The problem at 5000 RPM is not normal.

Suspect the MAF or lambda sensors, check the plug condition/gap for starters.

Ive got the oposite problem.

Decided to test my MY02 (standard except WR Sport BB).
At beginning of last week I filled brim full with optimax, did 164.4 miles over the week topped back to brim and had used 23.77L (5.22 Gal) guage was still way over half full. My maths is rusty but that seems to be average of 31.5 to gallon !!. Was mixed driving with plenty of cane at times.

Interesting I did roughly the same test when the car was brand new with almost no miles and it did around 24 to gallon also on optimax.

Maybe just a blip I dont know, if it continues that high, ill have to get a TEK3 or something to bring it down abit - LOL.

Even with this low consumption the car feels fine, much better infact than when it was new.

Would be interested to see if a standard MY99/00 gets any more or any less based purely upon town driving?

IMO It seems to be right for town driving.
My average per tank seems around 280, almost all out of town motorway runs.
MY97 standard WRX, except centre&bb, JR Racing flat panel.

If you mean 220 miles between fillups (ie 20mpg ) then it is normal. I used to get 20mpg round town, and my mate with a heavier right foot gets 18-19mpg.

I get between 200 and 250 to a tank, never to the bottom though - I fill up when it usually takes about 45/50 litres.

On average I get 22mpg

The only time I get as much as 220miles to the tank full in my legacy turbo is on the Motorway when I resist the temptation of the right foot! 20Mpg is normal/good.

Wrong car if you are looking for economy!!!!

hmm, I'm not convinced at all.

I've had my RB5 (MY99) for 4.5yrs and I have never got anything as low as 200-miles from a full tank.

For the first 2yrs the car was used for work, so about 60% was motorway and the rest driving around city centres.

On one granny-driving test cruise I managed 394-miles out of a full tank of SUL. That's the most I've ever seen from my car and it still had about 3 litres left.

My usual 20-mile per day commute to work with some good short blasts sees at least 300-miles out a tank.

These are performance cars and if you ride the rev range you'll eat a lot of juice. On track I bet I'd see 150-miles tops, but treat it like a standard car and I can't see why you'd fail to see almost 300-miles from a tank - from a std UK car at least.

I guess it depends on the size of tank as to how much you get from a full tank. I seem to recall that the tank size varies as someone claimed to get 60 litres in a tank. That is not feasible for me though.

Ive got a 00 Ukspec.
200per tank is about average for me too, moderate use on the throttle, but its always boosting, I tried but just cant drive it like a grandad.
These things fuel so rich, Ive upped my boost and run a AFR meter, its still lighting me up in a neon blue. Power Engineering (middx) said that a Phase 1 remap of a later car could smooth out my power deliver and help towards my fueling..£150. might pay for itself in fuel savings.

WRX STi3. recently got 27.5mpg on a sedate (relativley!!) run up the motorway - unbelievable. Normally get 21mpg ish, 60% motorway 10% A-roads and 30% lanes, which constitutes my commute.

How old is your car? MY96 and newer have 60 litre tanks. Older than that have 50 litre...

STi Version 5 only run on Optimax and get about 240 to 270 miles per tank full. That's part town and part country road driving - no motorway runs. Motorway runs I get more like 340 mils per tank, crusing at a steady rate with a few spurts but not many, just to get around idiots or away from those that like to stay on your ****.

worst was 170 - included a very fast run down to Santa Pod and lots of B road fun..

altho noticed that I can drive briskly on the motorway with boost being used sparingly yet still return 250 ish..

180 miles for 45litres. On average. STI 5 Type R Ltd.

Bit more on motorway (It's that longer 5th ratio).

I got 145 to my last tank, which I used up in about 2 hours last Sunday morning (but that is the heavier STi 7 with more power on B-roads)

My standard MY00UK I got about 220 to the tank with mostly town driving, around the same with country driving and about 300 on the motorway. I'd say your figures are extremely typical.

Town & motorway 300, long journey 380, never under 250. This is on a fairly well-endowed car too (~400bhp).

Anyway with seriously bad economy even when driving like a nonce, should probably invest in a new lambda probe - they only last 30k & will likely read 'lean' after that (ie the car will run rich - very rich - on cruise). Would pay for itself pretty quickly!

Heres a question, why does the first 3/4's of my tank seem to dissapear at a sensible rate and the last quarter of a tank seems to dissapear with frightening speed.

I sometimes stop, get out of the car and check underneath for a leak as I cannot beleive that you can go through petrol so quickly!

I came from a Volvo 850 running about 280bhp and that was better than the scooby for petrol consumption.

220 the norm for ordinary driving for me,regularly just get 160/170 but then it's a plaything. I didn't buy it to do economy runs in it.

I did Durham to Cambridge which is 220 mls on the great north road on one tank of Optimax in my classic. I did this doing very high speeds and heavy breaking for the speed cameras.

I have a stiV4 with full decat and ramair filter and with everyday driving I only manage 160-170 per tank and even on motorway driving i have only ever managed 220 at that was sticking to 77-75. Is this not normal then as you guys seem to be getting better consumption than mine.

Will a select monitor be able to tell me for certain is there is a fault with a lamaba or maf.
