Johnny: Changing the rear diff oil isn't hard by any stretch of the imagination, it's just a bit awkward getting under there.

Bottom plug drains, top plug to refill. You'll need to make sure the car is dead level on the stands when you change though, if you want to get the level right. Having a bottom fed oil bottle with a right-angled tube will also make refilling considerably less awkward!

Use a quality 75w/90 gear oil like Mobil 1 SHC or Castrol Syntrax.

Richard: Unless you have an automatic, the front diff shares its oil supply with the gearbox. You check the level with the gearbox dipstick. The rear diff however is separate, and has its own oil filler/drain plugs.

Gearbox drain plug is located under the front diff housing. The plug has a magnet recessed into it which collects bits of swarf, and all that needs to be cleaned off before the plug is replaced.

You refill it through the dipstick pipe. Either remove the intercooler and fit a funnel straight into the neck, fit a piece of pipe to the funnel, or get a "bendy funnel" from Halfords.

You will need between 3.2 and 3.5 litres of the same, quality 75w/90 gear oil.

Wink

G/Box is drained from the bung underneath the car and filled from the dipstick. Easy job just takes a while to fill as it is a small hole so you can only get a small funnell in. I put a bit of hose that I had lying around onto the end of funnel and inside the dipstick tube (by intercooler)to make it easier.
Most info is in the subaru owners manual along with oil specs and quantities.
