Trouble selecting reverse
#1
Reverse on my series 2 STI has always been a bit notchy, after about 6 months, and after a few spirited sprints, I found that I had no reverse gear, or none that I could select. It appeared that the reverse gear was not available on the gate. After much pushing and pulling I eventually got reverse, but it was with a lot of trouble.
I did a search on Scoobynet for solutions, found some interesting stuff, but nothing that directly related to me problem. I did check the gearbox oil, and it appeared to be a bit low on the stick, I topped this up with some Castrol Syntrax that was recommended. All other gears now feel slicker, and reverse seems to be a bit easier to find, but its still not right.
Anybody had similar problems, or know what I should check for?

I have the same problem, i find that sticking it in first then in reverse does the trick.
I'd imagine (maybe wrong) that it is a worn selector, so unless you fancy a gearbox rebuild learn to live with it.

My reverse has always been a bit notchy. It was like this even with just 15 miles on the clock. I remember the Dealer telling me they were all like this and to just put it in first, then re-select reverse.

Mine actually feels like there is no position for reverse, but if I pull back the lever smartly, it goes in with a click (sort of sound) or clunk.
Bit worried that this is not going to cause any stress to gearbox or make things worse. Sometimes it appears better than other times

I have the same problem although not as bad as yours, i have a MY99 and found the reverse on this is very notchy, the way i work around it, is to let the clutch pedal up slightly whilst trying to engage reverse, works every time with no crunching or grinding.
