Engine noises ?

i'm fairly new to scoobs so if this is a lame question then tell me!!
I've recently bought my first scoob ,a 2 year old WRX bugeye, and for the first time i've noticed a ticking noise from both the left and right side of the engine and wanted to know if this is normal ??
is it just the plugs sparking or something that obvious or is the ticking a bomb waiting to go off ??
