A while back i lost 5th then it came back. Local gear box place was a waste of time said the box would be fine just replace 5th. Anyway stupid i no i left it as all was well again. Then while driving in 2nd there was a horrible thud then scraping coming when driving in this gear. On idle there is a clunking coming from the engine bay and when u dip the clutch it goes.

So has the gear box gone completey i never got to test the other gears properley as i got the car straight home.

How much am i looking at for a new box if thats what i need as i expect i do and for it to be fitted its for MY97 uk2000.

Also is there a better alternative to the uk box say one of the closer ratio boxes.

Cheers, John

Did they do that job then? Take it not from what you say below. When you say 5th "went", what do you mean? You could put the lever in the 5th gear position but got no drive, or you couldn't even put the stick in the gate?

Nasty, shaft/gear damage almost inevitably - possibly caused by a big bit of shrapnel that was floating round since the previous incident.

Impossible to say without stripping it. If you've had industrial size bits of metal floating around in it for a while, it's a fair bet that the damage is widespread. One thing you could try would be to drain the oil and see what else drops out, but without knowing what you were looking at it's unlikely you'd learn much from seeing random broken bits of gearbox in front of you.

Depends entirely on whether you get yours rebuilt, get a used box from somewhere like Central Subaru or Grade A, or get an exchange unit from one of the other Subaru specialists. Sure some of the above will chip in during office hours tomorrow with some options and prices.

Also is there a better alternative to the uk box say one of the closer ratio boxes.
You need to think carefully what you want before going down that route. The STi close ratio boxes are designed with the higher-revving STi engines in mind, so while you'd be higher up the rev-band all the time, you'd be less able to exploit it than you'd like. While you'd get better in-gear acceleration, you'd also have to put up with high engine speeds (and thus higher noise levels and poorer fuel economy) at motorway cruising speeds.

You'd also almost certainly have to change your rear diff to match the new box, and if you managed to find a DCCD equipped one, you'd need a new instrument panel, diff ECU and thumbwheel to match, so not really an option if you want to do it as cost-effectively as possible.

Cheers for the reply grease monkey.

They never replaced it. I went away to find somewhere else as they wanted £450 to replace 5th thats when it came back. It just wouldnt engage youd try and try but it wouldnt go in.

Ill check the oil tomorow and see what happens.

Think ill stick with the standard box then and think about the other things later on.

Does £900 sound about right to fit and supply a box as thats what a friend has been charged ive found out.

Cheers, John

Hmmm, if the gearstick wouldn't physically go in the 5th gear position, it sounds more like a breakage in the selector system rather than the gears themselves. Either way £450 sounds like a lot to replace the one ratio (or fork), bearing in mind that 5th can be changed without stripping the entire box.

Just looking at the dipstick won't tell you a lot, I was talking about draining the box completely.

If that's for a warranted, exchange box, fitted, it doesn't sound too far out, but the devil's in the details. All depends what sort of warranty you get, whether the box has been rebuilt, etc. etc.

clunking while idling means you've got missing teeth/cog somewhere, if you have a look at my thread when mine did the same thing (1st gear on mine) you'll see plenty of pics & advice to be going along with

price for a recon/SH gearbox was about 400-450, you can fit it yourself if you brave/stupid like me
