LOST FIFTH GEAR
#2
I have this exact problem, and the car is currently off the road because of it.
There is a nut that comes lose on fifth gear that needs to be tightened as it comes lose over time on some cars apparently. However, this was not the case on mine, as I had actually worn away the teeth and other bits, which has meant a new fifth gear being required. Apparently this is a known problem with Scooby's of a MY99 and MY00 era, and Subaru have got a replacement 5th gear available that needs to get fitted.
The only real advice I can give you, is that you will be better off seeing a dealer as soon as possible, as driving around everywhere in 4th gear is not nice, and I'm speaking from experience!
I hope it's just the nut for you.
