Question

Why is it on saloons e.g. Scoob that the exhaust goes from the engine and makes it all the way to the back of the car?

It seems like a lot of weight ( and money )could be saved by say the exhaust ending after the downpipe. Exhaust systems for Porsches, MGF's are only a short distance from the back of the car and still exit the back of the car.

I would imagine it would be a whole lot louder and part of the reason is to dampen down the noise. But can't some kind of silencer be incorporated? I have seen many lorries with a side exit pipe and so these exhaust systems do not look so long.

Can someone educate me as there must be specific reasons why all manufacturers run the exhaust down the length of the car.

Perhaps because if you had a side exit on your decatted overfuelling scooby you might toast a few schoolkids at the next zebra crossing?

You could have exhaust pointing down at the end.

Anyway, teach pesky kids to keep away from the car lol!
