I was on my way to work when a loud clanging sound started from my engine, so i stoped and had a look under the bonnet and could not see any bits moving about. so i started it back up and it was knocking it t*ts out! so i got the AA out and got em to take me home, he said it sounded like the big ends or the cams knocking.
I always change the oil ect and never had any probs with it before,
how much would it cost to get a new engine or to get it fixed in the newcastle area? I dont know much about cars so any advice would be a massive help. it is a 93wrx with 78,000,
de-cat boost runing at 0.9 bar filter and allways on optimax & ob

Where from the engine was the knocking coming from? Middle or edges.... middle = BAD, edges = NOT SO BAD, but still not nice.

Breakers can get you an engine on exchange for a grand or so.

OK getting engine. But you'll have to find out what caused it to go in the first place

I just got mine back yesterday after parting with a loaned £6000 to replace engine and turbo
Investigation appears to me to have been a faulty MAF sensor (£74)..........JEEZ.

Faulty MAF sensor, christ. I had 3 of them fail on my sti5 with HKS filter before I went the GEMS route which doesn't use it.

Any details on this GEMS.
I've just heard it mentioned and no nothing about it.

Is it a standard ECU replacement/Is it mappable /Cost?

Suggest you contact Mark at Import Car Parts, Pennine Way Garage, West Auckland, Co. Durham. He is doing these engines all the time.

GEMS is a piggy back system that connects to the original ecu board and give you a fully mappable system, with Diff control, ALS, Traction Control , data logging etc etc.

I have had it fitted to my STi5 since June 2001 and mapped to 1.35 bar, noticably increased torque from standard.. but clutch has been slipping for some time now.. not bad since I am on the original clutch/gearbox with 63k on the clock!

i can give you details of the who did my mapping, general costs £1300quid. but gives you piece of mind as the mapping is taylored for your car and it's setup.

Regards,
Graeme

I have found out it is from the centre of the engine & it is the crank that has gone, is this a big job ?

Have you stripped the engine to confirm it's the crank?

Could be a head gasket. Can sound similar.
