i'm getting a blitz b/b and induction kit fitted tomorrow on my 2001 wrx, i've been reading on here about people blowing maf sensors due to induction kits? is this true or does it not happen to most cars? what is a maf sensor is it easy to replace? I'm thinking twice about the induction kit now! please help! (not to good on engines)

Worst cases apply to MY99-00, I think. Don't know how bad it is with the bugeye. Just have a quick browse and you'll find loads of posts on MAFs. The sensors are around £70 and if you are likely to have probs you might want to stock up as I think shortages do occur. Some guys get through MAFs very frequently.

Forgot to say that you might want to do some more homework on the performance of different brands of induction kits. Some don't filter very effectively

Most people recommend K&N for trouble free running.

I fitted a pipercross filter last year and that shot my sensor.
The filter was the sponge filter type. You have to spray a oily substance on the filter to protect it (i think it's for protection)
That oil then covered the maf sensor which is on the air inlet pipe just after the filter (8 inches) the sensor then didn't read the air quality properly so the car ran too lean. The Ecu ran in safe mode and would not go over 3,500 rpm. Took it to Power Enginiering who sorted it out for me. Could have blown the engine and cost me mega bucks.
I now have a K&N induction fitted by P'E' Who make there own mount for it.
All i will say, and this is due to my own expereance, get the cotton type of filter and not the sponge type.

Sorry to go on a bit, I hope this helps

Adam

My MAF may be causing problems -but on a MY97 , so its a hot wire rather than film version.
I understand that the MAF on MY99- can be bought without the housing for about £70.
Can the MY97-98 MAF also be bought sans housing?
Anyone know the part no. and cost?

Nick

Basically if you have a MY98 - MY00 why mess around with induction when it only gives miniscule results in the first place. Buy a £250 induction kit excluding fitting, and you'll soon be paying over £300 for a MAF sensor! Complete waste of time

Rob,
1st you don't have to pay £250 for an induction kit,
2nd they do make a differance and you are adviced to, if making other mods.
3rd £300 for a maf sencor, you could get 4 for that.

Regards Adam
