Wink

Been reading the posts about this Castrol Syntrax and wondering if it would actually make a difference..

Filled the gearbox with this at the weekend

And it really has transformed my tractor feeling gearchanged into how a car gearbox change should feel.. impressive.

Not cheap though!

I hated the feel of the change on the box when I first bought it..
compared to the Toyota I had it was like a tractor..

Makes it a bit more slick.. my main hope is that on sub-zero morning it will actually go into first without having to come to a stop.. etc..

I just went to change my rear diff and the two plugs are stuck fast.. not enough time to mess about with it, will have a look perhaps next weekend.... strange square plugs..

when i bought my 95 WRX after a long drive on the motorway and hot the gear box used to get really stiff between shifts as if the previous owner had put the wrong type of oil in it or something so i put the syntrax in and hey presto felt like a almost new gearbox super stuff

My rear diff bolts where pretty stuck in too..! but the rachet from my socket set fitted perfectly into the hole i then just tapped/whacked it with a hammer and it came out pretty easy..

tip for undoing rear axle plugs, jack car up, insert long handles socket, place end of socket bar on ground, let car down off jack

If i remember correctly the rear diff oil is not the same as the gearbox oil as its a LSD and requires a different variant.

You may already know this so i will shut up.

It is the same stuff, castrol 75W90 does fine (at least on the plated diff models not sure about the STI7 etc with suretrac).

LOL at letting the car down on the rachet!

The rear diff has a sealed LSD.. you cannot change the oil in that... just the diff oil around it.. hence the same as the gearbox

Not sure if they are all like that though..

The rear diffs on uk and wrx cars are not plated diffs (like type r's/22b etc) and so you do not need to put lsd fluid in. It's a viscous coupling (which is a sealed unit) and the fluid you put in basically lubes the bits around the sealed viscous diff. If that makes sense. So no you don't need a different fluid.

Simon, did you buy yours from Halfords, or did you get it elsewhere.

Just been and bought some Motul 15/50 for the engines service next friday, Ł68 for 8 litres, works out cheaper than 5 litres.

I tried to buy some Motul 300 gear oil, but they did not have any, it was a motorbike shop in leeds.

I need some new gear oil, as the stuff i put in when we changed the clutch is crap, borrowed it from my mates garage, as we had not planned to change the oil.

Steven,

No got it from a motor factors for Ł7.99 a litre! I went in and bought there only two bottles.. waited a month for them to restock and bought the 2 they then had

Halfords wanted Ł9.50 a litre I think it was and also didn't have enough stock.

Why they don't do it in larger cans I dunno.. Castrol do it in 25litres.. mg: and 1litres bottles..

I went to get some engine oil last ngiht but couldn't get my usual Mobil Motorsport.. posted another thread about that (memory just kicked in.. must check it) looking at Castrol RS 10W60 now for either Ł27.99 for 4litres or Ł99 for 16litres... this is from Castols website and they do the gearbox oil on it too...

Castol

Cheers

Simon
