I am thinking of changing to an uprated downpipe for my 96 Prodrive (240bhp). However, there seem to be quite a few different designs on the market. Some are completely open (scoobysport) and some have twin downpipes (Magnex)

Would appreciate any comments on which ones you have and how are they in terms of quality, price, power gains and quite importantly LOUDNESS!!

Cheers
Ed

I have an open neck down pipe on my 96.. very happy with it..

I think twin dump downpipes are a good idea but the pipes separate part way down the exhaust flow.. the gases leave the turbo and fight for where to go and then hit the barrier between the two pipes of the twin dump.. unless you fit a splitter right up into the turbo I don't see how a twin dump can beat an open neck..

I have an old Scoobysport.. which was made by Hayward and Scott..

You then have the choice of 3inch or 2.5inch.. I have a 2.5Inch and I am very happy with it.. unless you intend going big big power then I think you get a little more power lower down the rev range with a 2.5 rather than 3inch..

Hayward & Scott, have had years of development and hands on experience at fitting downpipes.

There are plenty of suppliers for H&S including ourselves, you won't regret having it done, just big grins as you get better spool up amd more power...........

As to MOT.. you can get a pass with just the centre cat.. so you have to crawl about underneath and refit the standard centre before the MOT but it is worth it.. you only need the one cat to pass.. so the downpipe can stay on..

Either that or go for a fast flow cat system such as a GGR I believe do them but no where near as much gain as there is with a full decat.

i was thinking of the scoobysport downpipe with a T75 catalysed mid section. PE claim no losses with this mid section even on a car with 360 horses!

CEL - No problem on the older cars.. I have no cats and no CEL light (MY96).

I believe the MY01 onwards have 2 lambda sensors, one for the ecu to read the air to fuel ratio and adjust the fuel by, and the other further back down the system to check the cats are working.
ECU then sticks the CEL on if the second sensor gives a wrong reading etc..

Have to disagree with that one. Quite apart from PE who have dyno'd their own centre section to prove the cat loses very little if anything, there are several other cars that have shown "typical de-cat" figures with a sports cat, mine included: 284bhp/272lbft with APS sports cat exhaust/de-cat up-pipe & Tek 2 on a MY02 WRX. The difference with a sports cat will often IMHO be less than the difference between a well designed and a poorly designed de-cat.

What's a typical quote for fitting downpipe??

I have been quoted 3 hrs at Powerstation, approx £70 at Scoobysport and 1hr (£50) at local dealership.

Simply swap your centre cat back in, get it up to temp and then the car will pass.

Swapping the old centre in takes 10 minutes
