Route one with a 215bhp 1997 Impreza?
#1
I'm guessing this is the Uk spec machine, all I know is that it's 215bhp.
I've had a little look for relevant material but I hope you don't mind me posting up.
Basically, more power is required. Can we start with the tried and tested exhaust and induction kit?
Are there any standard maps available on a chip, a la plug and play?
Bleed valves work on scoobies or are they frowned upon as with other marques?
Essentially if you could tell me what the best bang for buck is (without the bang) I would much appreciated it.
Cheers

The most common route is an exhaust system, preferably a full system and a decent air filter. The backbox will make some extra power but its the downpipe which really gets things going. Whether the filter is a cone filter or a good panel filter is up you, they perform pretty closely to each other.
After that, its a Dawes device or a piggy back such as Unichip. If the budget will stretch to it, consider a Link ecu, these work very well and are a replacement ECU, mapped to suit your set up. Ecutek is not available for your car.

Just watch the induction kit as some can damage the MAF sensor or make it misread.
The turbo is a fairly small TD04, but responds well to a bit of a midrange boost.
The Impreza uses closed loop boost control, so a bleed valve will only raise the peak boost and the ECU will try to pull it down again. You could use an MBC, or a bleed valve if you used a fuel cut defender.
Knocklink is a good idea if fiddling to this degree- the standard ECUs run quite a lot of timing advance and detonation is not far away if you whack up the boost.
Run high octane fuel and your preferred method of boosting it to get more out of the standard ECU.

Thanks guys, some helpful stuff there.
I've always been warey of induction kits because of their tendancy to pull in hot air and cause all sorts of unnecessary problems, so I am more than happy to go with a panel filter. Any recommended makes? Green/ITG/K&N?
Exhaust wise, full system is good, again any recommended/proven brands worth a go?
Thanks again people

ITG or K&N panel filters do the job. K&N 57i induction kit seems OK.
Most of the exhaust systems are liked, there have been some issues with boost creep with some twin dump variety downpipes though. Would suggest 3" bore (although it made no difference on mine at approx 400 BHP surprisingly) if you are going for a big tune up, otherwise just choose on preferred volume/looks/price/availability.
Mr Croney above can of course supply your needs

Is that so?
I was just looking on the scoobyworld website, any body know it?
ITG panel filter looks like a good move.
Exhaust wise, tempted to try BLITZ, 30bhp for a full system inc downpipe. Not bad.
Not sure on the desired level of performance yet, but just be handy to know the options. I'd say a good blitz system would be good for an engine making more ponies later right?

Didn't I see a standard noise level option?
I know scoobies rumble as standard, how loud is loud, setting off shop window alarms? Making poxy fiestas chirp in the high street?

I have set off a car alarm with my full decat..
Also the neighbours complain that it wakes them up..
I just tell them that they should be up by then! retired people...
what do they need to be in bed for they have so much to do..

i have the hayward and scott full de-cat it is awseomely loud and gain 30 bhp and the itg filter another good buy just be wary of the downpipe mine cost quite a bit to fit cause subarus bolts on the old downpipe tend to sheer and are a nightmare to get off so that was nearly £100 in fitting costs alone.

How does a UK 97 with 344bhp grab you?
still on standard ECU, injectors, internals and clutch!
Mail me and I'll tell you my spec if interested.
Cheers
oh, and by the way, if it's a 97, you've only got 208bhp standard, 99 onwards cars have 215bhp, sorry

LOL
YHM = You Have Mail
Cheapest way is get a full decat, filter of your choice, a Dawes device + boost gauge. You should see around 250 BHP if not more if you set the boost to 1.0 bar.
I'd uprate the brakes first though...

I have upgraded the brakes to crossed/drilled discs + green stuff pads.
Rich Wild has sent a great email to me - thanks Rich!
Will discuss with my garage the best way forward, I am thinking of a decatted down pipe + Blitz SUS induction kit (with the adaptor that was not fitted with the earlier HKS kit - compensates the fuel air mixture (I think)) and some Samco hoses.
Car is good for 245bhp at present.
