What is a knocklink?
#1
Morning all.
Just had a trust induction kit fitted to my STI8 and the difference in sounds etc from the car is massive.
Under acceleration I get the whisle sound of the filter sucking in air and then under very heavy acceleration she starts with a whistle and that develops into a WRC style chatter sound. Also cruising at about 85mph there is an underlying whistle sound.
All this is fine and im getting used to it but when I put a note on general there was a reply saying get a knocklink fitted ASAP.
What is a knocklink and what will it do?

Whistling noise is just the air going the the air filter.
A knocklink, detects detonation (det or knock) in the engine. Det is the term used for describing when the fuel is ignited at the wrong point of the poiston cycle IIRC. Too much det, can cause serious damage to the pistons and or cylinder.
A knocklink is a visual display connected to a sensor on the block of the engine, that amplies the noises heard, and displays them in an LED fashion. When you hit the big red LED, and it continues to flash, you should lift off, as you may be causing damage.
For the cost of a knocklink and sensor, approx £150?, it is worthwhile imo, especially if you have modified your car.
From memory, the sti7's were prone to a bit of boost spiking when they ahd different exhausts and filters, the boost spikes will contribute towards det. Not sure whether the STi8's are prone to it though.
Hope that helps.
