Hi all,

I have a P1 with a problem with te b/box.
It goes through all gears fine except 3rd, when you try to put it in 3rd it grinds really bad!!!!
Also if i sit in the car with it running with no clutch down and try to put it in gear it wont (obviosly) but with 3rd it grinds an trys to go in????
Any advice would be very helpfull.

sounds like third is stripped ,if you have no warranty you could drain the oil just to see how many teeth come out. if you are paying for the repairs I would consider an uprated gear kit from lateral performance, especially if you are keeping the car or modding it.

Im sure my mate (p1owner) has just had his gearbox replaced on his P1 recently due to 3rd gear going on him

He had it done under warranty, along with half a new engine, and last week he had a new flexi clutch put in under warranty, to get rid of the judder

 

Sounds like the synchro on 3rd has completely knackered. Doesn't sound like it's stripped the teeth, but means a full rebuild and new synchros throughout.

If it's out of warrenty, I might be able to help...

 

As Dave said, because if it had stripped gears it would go into gear and then crunch once engaged, and quite often pop back out of gear.
