Hi Guys,

Wondering if you can help me with a detonation problem I'm having. The car is a JDM STI 7 here in NZ. The mods are as follows:

1. Ecu remap (off the shelf Tek2) by MRT in Australia
2. 3" turbo back exhaust w/splitter mod
3. Walbro fuel pump
4. Boost gauge
5. Knocklink

Thought was due to poor fuel here in NZ so ordered 220 liter drum of unleaded racing petrol (110 octane) noticed car is still detting particulary WOT in 5th and 6th, KL hits red.

The boys at MRT are good but I am wondering what it could be?
Too much ignition in the remap? The JDM's are pretty advanced anyway right? Is it possible it could be on the edge? The lower gears seem to be fine with occasional yellow and rare red in 4th. Have reset the ECU multiple times. Also car feels like the boost is missing even though the gauge is reading 1.2 bar, feels like it just steadily accelerates albeit quickly. Could you guys give me any ideas what it could be. Any help would be appreciated. Just want to enjoy my car. Thanks.

You have virtually the exact same setup as me, except I am running a 2.5" ScoobySport turbo back catless zorst.

I don't have a K/L yet but I did some DD readings and my car peaks at 1.38 bar in 5th gear and shows nothing but positive advance on the DD.

What baffles my mind is that even if it was on the edge, putting in 110 octane fuel should eliminate det if it was on the edge unless it was severly over the edge map wise, no ?

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,
Ray

G'day Boss! Welcome aboard m8.

MRT have changed their maps recently and are different to the UK ones. It would be hard to diagnose on here I'd say without knowing the map, however you could be right with what you suspect with the ignition issue.

Some of the EcuTek tuners on here may know though.

MRT have a forum and one specifically for EcuTek questions. It may be worth putting up a question there as well. Brett from MRT answers questions regularly in that forum.

http://www.mrtrally.com.au/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=10

Then again it could be a diffrent issue such as a faulty AFM known as MAF on here . Do you have Delta Dash to do some logs? You could post them on here and some of the techies can have a look and give their oppinions.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Do you have the knock link set up right, you sure it's not to sensitive and just picking up engine noise ?

I found that unless you have the gear to check it you can easy see lihgts when it is just engine noise.

Can you hear it ping ?

You KL might just detect engine noise instead of what you think is det. A KL is not very efficient.
What kind of Walbro fuel pump did you fit in ? I've heard somewhere that the Walbro 255HP (GSS342) drawn more electrical power than what the stock STi7 electronic pump controller can provide. In this case, fuel mixture is even leaner than when using the stock fuel pump!!!
This problem should not appear using a Walbro 190lph fuel pump.

Pete or Pat,

Any truth to the above regarding the uprated Walbaro 255 fuel pump (I think this is the one you guys supply from PE with your remaps) ?

Cheers,
Ray

Hi Ray.Hows the Ecutek?
As for the KL picking up engine noise,of course, but I c'ant believe normal engine noise would make the red light activate.

HI Deep !

Ecutek remap is superb.....hits 1.3 bar in 4th and holds about 1.25 bar and then trickles off as nears the top.....car flys and I am worried about gear box in 1st and 2nd gear due to torque

Only thing that has me concerned is the det that showed up on your K/L a few weeks ago....

Then I read about this gentleman as well....

Now I read on this same thread about the Walbaro fuel pump potentially being a problem due to the cars elec system.....and that the stock pump is better....

So besides the worryy about my car blowing up I am extremetly happy.....is I knew for sure that my car was safe I could really enjoy the car because like I said the full decat with Ecuteck remap by ScoobySport is awesome !

Oh, will have to just keep checking the deltadash and make sure all is well

Everything cool with your beast ?

Cheers,
Ray

I have come across the problem of the fuel pump controller not coping with the higher amps that the walbro draws, DD logs the duty changes as happening but there is no proof that the pump is responding and ... error code for fuel pump controller appears.

Hi Ray.I've been out of the country for two weeks.I'm going to put fresh fuel in the car tommorrow and see what happens. My boost is now showing 1.55(x100kPa) on the Defis. This was the boost we tried to achieve at the time of the remap but the car would'nt have it,now it does for some reason!(maybe learning, maybe atmospheric change). So it maybe boost related? Anyway I'll keep you informed after testing with the new fuel.
Hi Bob.If there is no proof that the fuel pump is responding or not how have you concluded that the problem lies there? Are you still running a Walbro(without seperate electrical supply)?
