Am I risking my engine
#1
Hi there,
I see from various postings in here that people run higher than standard fuel & boost pressure. I recently received my 1995 WRX import. It has the following engine mod's :-
Mongoose s/s exhaust with no cat's
MINE'S ECU
HKS SPF induction
SAMCO i/c & cooling hoses
When giving it full boost(around 1.1 barg is achieved) I suffer from fuel cut/ overboost. Car runs on Optimax.
I have no knowledge of uprated fuel pump/injectors and it doesn't have any of these lambda/knock sensors that I see mentioned in earlier posts.
Does any of you experienced Impreza engine mod's have any idea's that could help/convince me that my engine isn't at risk without these add-on's with the current mod's on my engine.

the reason you are hitting fuel cut is its activated at 1.05 bar of boost on pre 96 cars.
you need to clean out your boost control solinoid with some brake cleaner to see if that helps with the overboost problem.
don't know much about the mines ECU's though.

Welcome to wrx heaven!!
I know this is the last thing you want to hear but i'm keen to make sure that nobody else goes through what i have.
I drive a 93 wrx import and i'm now on my second engine because nobody warned me what can happen to these cars if you dont take precautions.
All i say is Detting is a common problem.
Use a minimum of optimax and if you can afford it, use octane booster.
Buy a knock link which will tell you when you are detting. This is a good one for starters as detting is the common cause of engine failure in these jap imports.
Dont worry they are great cars and half the fun is figuring out this sort of thing.
Enjoy

Thanks Guy's for your replies
Jonny,
The Mine's ecu lifts the fuel cut & overboost settings as I e-mailed Mines direct for info on the ECU changes so that shouldn't be too bad.
Mark,
I'll definately enquire about the knock link as I don't want to screw up the engine. Will also see about the Octane booster too.

Interesting.
I may have a mines ECU as i'm boosting at 1.1 bar at the min and the fuel cut doesnt kick in.
I have looked under the footwell but just cant get the screws of the ECU box!!
