Help - Rounded off nut on Downpipe !
#1
Yes i know, there are so many more things you can do before you round off a nut ! anyway i have rounded off the nut on a mates scoob and feel responsible now. It is the on underneath by the steering arm/UJ. We have had heat on it, tried with a 14mm 6-point wall drive, didn't move it, tried with a 12 piont ringer and it chewed it up and rounded it off !
How can i get this nut off now ? Not enough room to hammer a 13mm or 12mm socket on, so now i am stuck !
Any ideas ?

wind another nut on and weld it to either the stud or the other nut and remove the stud or both nuts together... Have had to do this myself too..
Feel very sorry for you...
And dont get in the way when welding it..

Had similar problem on the up-pipe, but the engine was out so not sure if it will work, but hack-saw parallel with the bolt, up against the threads, keep cutting until you removed part of the nut (about a third of its area) then with hammer and chisel/punch a quick blow to the remaining nut opens it up enough to unwind with your fingers!
Don`t konw if you can insitu, but worked a treat for me on two nuts!

I've used a nut splitter but not in such a confined space on the downpipe. They're bit fiddly to use and although it did split the nut it didn't just fall off after being split. I still spent ages actually getting the nut off after that.

I hate working on friends' cars for this reason, no better way to screw up an easy job.
Can you get a dremel up there? Grind a slot in the nut if you can then chisel the **** out of it. Probably will need a new stud.

There are loads of great ideas to get nuts off but the issue here is the location. You have literally no room up there its a nightmare. I had the same problem recently and I cut the nut with a dremel until I got bored and then used an air chisel which spun the nut free with ease... It did ruin the stud tho. And that then wouldn't come out... so I had to remove the turbo and weld onto the stud to remove it.
