Virgin seeks engine out advise
#1
I have to remove a badly knocking STI 4 engine.
I am fairly handy with the spanners, so I don`t need a bolt by bolt explanation, just a few pointers/hints from anyone who has good experience with this and can advise a scooby first timer?
I.E. a/c unit, gearbox left in or dropped fisrt (bearing in mind I have not ramp) etc.
AND I THOUGHT STI ENGINES WERE BULLET PROFF??!!

A big heavy job this, but I have a manual from Halfords for the subaru range, includes the Justy, Legacy and the Impreza, BUT it covers these basics so will help you. It is an American Manual in a large series, nowhere as good as a Haynes, but try it!
From the pictures in Jap Car magazine, many seem to leave the box in and pull the motor from the top of the engine bay. Guess you would spend more time on the zillions of wires and pipes around the engine.
Good luck, and I hope the next engine will be better!
Graham.

Thanks guys.
I managed to get it out on the weekend and it wasn`t to bad a job, once you had got passed the millions of wires/pipes, and left the box in place.
The bad news was the suspected big end once the sump was off, you could move it with your fingers!!
So a new short motor/clutch and various tweeks whiles its out and i shall be very carefull with my future gear changes!!?!!

Hey! I'm the one in the hat on the 4th page of the engine swap page at wrxworld.com
Its really not that bad of a job if youre just swapping motors. The tear down and reassembly of an EJ20 itself should be done by someone that knows what they are doing though. But a few folks with an engine lift can swap a motor in a lazy weekend. Were about to do our 6th? engine swap and 2nd complete jdm STi RA drivetrain conversion here in a few weeks. Its really more fun than work when you have good company.

911,
I was having a race (obviuosly on a private road!?!) with a UK scoob, and went from 4th to 5th but missed a gear a revved an unloaded engine, which was apparently the cause of my big end failure??
The oil level is completely fine, it doesnt use a drop of oil and has been well serviced, can anyone else explain/confirm this and any ideas on how to stop this happening again?
I have obtained a V5 STI short motor (cheers Pavlo) and am planning to build up in the next week or 2.
Can anyone advise on gasket prices and cheapest source, as I have just had a huge scare this morning (£750 for gaskets/service items!!!) WHAT??
