Question

Just been having a think as my MY97 is nearly hitting the big 100'000. The engines fine at the moment but i guess one day its got to let go.

I was just wondering would it be cheaper to replace it with an engine already built of a specialst? Also what engine could you fit in?? Or would it be better to have it rebuilt myself at a specialist?? Hoping a sti would fit in as its being sprayed cashmere yellow with sti kit.

I havent got a clue what this would cost so some help and advice required please so ill be prepared when the time comes.

I wouldn't say that your engine is likely to fail anytime soon just because its done a lot of miles.

If you've had regular oil changes and kept the servicing up to date, then that will help.

On the re-build side of things, I've just had my engine rebuilt following a big end failure. When I found out what the rebuild would cost (well in excess of 2.5K) I had forged internals fitted to hopefully prolong its life from now on. This did increase the cost considerably to over 4k fitted so I wouldn't choose to rebuild my engine again unless

1) I really really had to
2) I was after a lot more power and wanted to fit stronger internal components to help it cope with the power
3) I had the time/space/expertise to do it myself

Cheers

I'll second that. My daily driver of a car has done 249 000 miles, doesn't use oil / water whatever. Still on original clutch too..

Admittedly not a Subaru engine, but regular oil changes have definitely kept it sweet.

Cheers for the replies. I think i will buy a whole engine when it does eventually let go. Not for some time hopefully though. It is serviced correctly and regular oil changes every 3000 miles.

If possible i will go for a wrx engine. More power than the uk's and aint planning major mods just full de-cat.
