I have identical problems on my Type R...........
I am trying some new gearbox oil this afternoon to see if it is actually the syncros or whether good oil can sort the crunching.
Will then be getting an uprated clutch from Mark at Lateral Performance
Will let you know the results

Had same problem on my 96. Dont know about clutch but my gearbox was same symptoms.
Found that the syncro between 2nd and 3rd was knackered. Others were also slightly worn so replaced them all.

Just got back from Risborough 4WD Centre and I definately need the syncros doing on 4th and 5th as a minimum ........ Also ordering a Lateral Performance Clutch Kit as it is slipping more by the day
Hopefully book it in to be done next week
