AFAIK ...

They let someone hear when detonation is occurring within an engine.

Seem to recall they can literally look like stethoscopes held onto some part of the engine.

A metal deely attached to the head (I think?) with a hose coming off to a pair of closed headphones (the tube is split & goes straight into the headphones).
Basically, a stethoscope!
